Maybe this is an old well worn topic here, but what's up with diamondtalk?

Initially it seemed to me to be an older and slightly higher traffic site, but less well organized and sans pricescope, but upon furhter inspection, and especially after a bizarre encounter with the moderators, it seems to me that the place is really weird and most of the traffic is pretty uninformative

Specifically, I posted a totally uncontroversial request for opinions on a diamond merchant: americanfancies.com. (I don't know why I posted there instead of here -- I just happened to be logged into that site when I decided I was interested in something they had.)

I searched diamondtalk for any mention of this merchant and I found an old thread on the topic of americanfancies.com; I then added a new message asking for any reports or opinions on this merchant.

Shortly thereafter the entire thread was deleted and I found a PM in my mailbox asking me if I was affiliated with the merchant and asking why I posted to an old thread and why didn't I introduce myself in the "Greet new DT'rs" forum, and was I a "one-post wonder" and a shill for ther merchant and other paranoid things.

Thereafter followed some posts which were edited by the moderators or eventually deleted, but it left me feeling like I had stumbled into some bizarre paranoid community run by people right out of Orwell.

Who runs the place? And who appoints the moderators? (Oh yeah, the "Senators"). And did they have some terrible incident that causes them to be so paranoid?

They like here have had some problems with trolls recently.
It has put a lot of internet diamond boards on edge.

ok,,hate to sound so ignorant here, what is a troll?

Hi just-ice,

FYI-I found the following on dictionary.com of interest:

troll
An electronic mail message, Usenet posting or other
(electronic) communication which is intentionally incorrect,
but not overtly controversial (compare flame bait), or the
act of sending such a message. Trolling aims to elicit an
emotional reaction from those with a hair-trigger on the reply
key. A really subtle troll makes some people lose their
mind.

Also,

v.,n 1. [From the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban] To
utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable
responses or flames; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase
"trolling for newbies" which in turn comes from mainstream
"trolling", a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a
likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it. See also YHBT. 2. An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1; regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by the fact that the have no real interest in learning about the topic at hand - they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of life on the net, as in, "Oh, ignore him, he's just a troll." Some people claim that the troll (sense 1) is properly a narrower category than flame bait, that a troll is categorized by containing some assertion that is wrong but not overtly controversial.

Kindest regards always,

It WAS a great place.

Thanks Linda! I'm continually amazed at the wealth of info at my fingertips. This coming from someone who understands the art of baking cookies as opposed to the nasty cyber tracking kind.
I knew about the trolls under the bridge from reading Billy Goat Gruff(didn't know they went high tech!) Doesn't date me at all...HA!

It's a good question... more than likely, they're worried about people advertising for their competition, so they just delete everything that even looks like an ad or illegitimate referral. It's sort of a built-in flaw in these forums... when the people who run a forum have a financial interest in what it's discussing, you can imagine the conflict of interest.

That being said, I think the mods do a good job being fair and open. Nobody wants the forum to degrade into a bunch of ads and fake posts.

I did get something alike myself when started to post here - but Leonid's message was very civil. To a point, this is plenty understandable - no one likes 'trolls' and it's hard to tell them apart at the first move

Fess up and tell the truth! Diamond Talk is like Alice in the Wonder Land. You walk on egg shells and "wonder" when they will start screaming "off with their heads." This is the nice explanation! It is a VERY strange place. It is true that it used to be a nice, fun place. That was before the childish play ground "rules" started, "if your their friend then you can't be mine", and "if you play with them you can't play with me." Sorry folks but at 35 I am a little to old to play with rules like that. Ok, I am going to zip my mouth shut and be a good little girl. I just had to get that off my chest!
Terri

(I hope my truth and honesty doesn't get me in trouble for saying the above. I did try to say it as "nicely" as I could.)

Terri...you can speak freely.

Okay everyone. You know I'm no DT fan, but let's try not to create another DT-bashing thread.

Thank you, Hest. I agree. Let's be positive and try not to discuss other venues here.

Pretty please
