Sure, why not? If they have the roughs laying around and if they don't they will keep an eye out for one. Barry is looking for a particular stone for me right now to cut in a cushion.

I''m looking for a swiss blue topaz (yeah, I know) cushion to fit an old setting. The prior stone in it was 7.8 x 7.8. If I contact a cutter, can they make me something that should fit this?

If you''re going to have a stone cut to fit into a specific mounting you should discuss it with the person who''ll be setting the stone and make sure that the shape of the cushion will work with the style of setting that you have. A rounded corner cushion needs to be set with double prongs or a bezel in order to keep the stone from twisting and falling out. If you only have four prongs to hold the stone, make sure that the cutter places small flats at the corners, in order to give those prongs something to register against and keep the stone stable. Trying to fit a new stone to an old setting requires more than just a stone size, particularly with shapes that are not round or square, as the distance between the prongs is what matters and yet the stone ''size'' is across the shortest dimensions of the stone. Make sure to discuss this with both the cutter and the setter.
