i love the pictures of the bride and groom being showered with rose petals or walking through bubbles, but i''m not sure when to do this. we''re having a small outdoor ceremony and won''t have a receiving line. i''m worried that if we give guests rose petals or bubbles to use during the recessional that they''ll either forget about them or they''ll pelt each other in the back of the head. does anyone have any advice?

what about when you are leaving the party? have someone gather all the guests, hand out the stuff (I like rose or flower petals personally) and as you guys leave to go get into the car or whatever, they can do it then. It used to be that since the couple would change into going away clothes and leave to go on the honeymoon, everyone was gathered at the exit and was making a big sendoff. I did not do it, we got married at night and were staying in the hotel where we got married, so it got overlooked!

I had an outdoor wedding, too......we placed the small bubble containers on each seat.

When we turned to walk back down the "aisle" (brick walkway), the guests all blew them then. It was lovely - managed to catch some of the bubbles in the photographs, and it looked really cool as we were walking together.

Most of the weddings I went to as a kid, we waited until the couple left the reception... you know... off to their married life... but these days I think the B&G want to stay and enjoy the party! So lately it seems all these "send-offs" have happened at the end of the ceremony, before the reception. I think I like this better because everyone still looks fresh in the pictures, and that way everyone gets to participate, even if they have to leave early. I''ve seen the bubbles on the seat, but at the last wedding I went to, they had cones of flower petals on the chairs at the edge of the aisle. The person sitting there sort of distributed them among the people sitting in the row. Of course, if you have a lot of people and the rows are long, you''re back to not everybody being able to participate again...

In the end it comes down to this: "Do what you want."

thanks for your suggestions, ladies! if we do the petals or the bubbles they need to be done outside so that limits us to after the ceremony instead of at the end of the reception. our wedding will be small (~50 guests). the guests will be sitting in rows of 8. do you think bubbles or rose petals would be logistically easier? if we do petals we''d just hang a cone from each seat (i don''t know if this will make them easier to throw further). i think we''d just leave the bubbles on the seats. should we leave a note with them? any ideas of what it should say? thanks for your help.

I think you''d be fine with either with a row of 8 chairs. With bubbles, people can sort of blow them in your general direction and be fine, and with the petals, people can move towards the aisle into a litle bunch to toss them. Either would be lovely!

The wedding I just went to had a little note in the program to tell us what to do with the cones of petals. It''s good to note that somewhere or people might think it''s part of the decoration, whereas the bubbles are a little more obvious and well-known.

We had an outdoor ceremony on the patio right outside the large room for our reception. Since that meant nobody was travelling in between, and we knew people would leave the reception at different times, we had them do the bubbles as we were walking up the aisle after the ceremony.
