What to do with the flower girl? Any ideas?

I haven''t totally settled in on this color scheme yet, but I''m thinking of either black, very pale yellow, and white or black, very pale pink, and white.

Do I put my flower girl in the accent color? Would that look strange? I don''t want her to look like a little bride. I really want her to look like a little girl.

Oh and one other question, is black to severe for an April wedding? The lighter, spring colors didn''t seem to compliment my BM''s skin tone. Do you have any suggestions for lighter colors that might compliment every skin tone?

You can have your BM wear any color, I am having brown in July...

as for your FG-what about a white dress with a black sash? Are you having another color? My colors are brown and green, BM in brown, FG will be wearing ivory with an ivory sash, flowers are greens.

I feel that I''m having the same problem. I''m not having a flower girl but my wedding is in April & I want my accent color to be purple. I like the idea of mixing shades of purple but I can''t seem to find a shade that would look good on a bunch of pale white girls- haha. I was thinking about black with purple bouquets or sashes but I feel black is harsh too, although the groomsmen will be in black tuxedos.

As far as your flower girl, I think you can get away with your color & make her look cute & frilly.

I was actually going to suggest somewhat of the reverse. I don''t think that black is too severe. What time of day are you having the wedding and reception. You could go for a dress that comes to the knees or a little past the knees so your BM won''t be too hot and she''ll have a chance of reusing the dress again. As for the FG, if your colors are black and yellow (i.e. your BM wears black) your little FG could wear a yellow dress with a black satin sash or ribbon. That should help from keeping the little girl look like a little girl and not a mini bride. I was actually thinking about this as well since I want my FGs (if I have any) to have a nice dress that doesn''t look like a mini wedding gown.

Good luck!

Threadjack!

Amanda, why not try for silver with a purple sash? Wedding colors would be silver, purple, and black. I think those colors would be very elegant!

My BMs wore black and my flower girl wore a cute white dress with a black sash.

Ditto the black sash idea. You could get a simple white dress (or ivory, whichever you are wearing) and dress it up with a sash. I think it would look strange for an adorable little girl to be in a black dress, very wierd.

White dress with colored sash, or pale colored dress with white or black sash. I don''t think you have to worry about the baby bride look, even if she''s wearing a white dress, unless it''s floor length.

There are a lot of options.

Flower girls often wear dresses that are complimentary to the wedding gowns. I wouldn't even bother with a black sash on the dress if you don't want to. So if you get a champagne gown, and ivory gown, a light pink gown or a white gown, your FG would just wear the same shade. A nice short poofy girly dress wouldn't look like mini bride, but would still match everything.

If you have other colors in your wedding you can have your BMs wear black dresses with a colored sash and then have your flower girl wear a white dress with the same colored sash, or a dress the color of the BM's sashes.

Also other options for BM dresses are navy and brown. Both of which would look lovely with a second lighter color for your wedding colors. Most people can wear navy or chocolate.

Dark Brown looks great with pink, and ivory, and blue, and green.

Navy looks great with purples, blues, greens, whites, and done right, with fushia and pinks.

Your flower girl could definitely wear navy or Brown. OR again, a dress that matches yours with no accent sash, detail. Or one with an accent or sash detail.

And the navy or dark brown can be primary on the BMs but very minimal everywhere else.

My MOH wore black. I didn't have a flower girl. I didn't have black accents anywhere else. Only my wedding party wore the black. Everything else was just white green and orange (my colors).

As for spring colors most people look good in. I personally look like death in silver, platinum... those shades. But golds look nice on me. Your BMs could wear gold/champagne dresses. Although as I have no idea what their coloring is I don't know whether that would work. And then there is green. The ultimate spring color. And I personally think there is a shade of green out there that compliments everyone. You can do anything from a bright grass green, to a light silvery sagey green, a nice honeydrew, or a bold emerald.

And if you WANT spring colors like pale blues, or pinks, or yellows, or greens or lavenders. Your BM's don't have to be in the exact shade of pink. You can do a wedding with all pale pinks and have your BMs in a fushia. Or all pale blues and your BMs in Navy. All lavender wedding wtih you BMs in dark purple. Just pop a few springs of the darker tone into a few of the flowers (so all pink centerpieces with 99% pale pink, but just a couple of fushia accents. All lavender centerpieces with a few springs of dark purple something).

There are a ton of saturated colors that would work.... you stick the BMs in a shade that works for them. So a Deep Violet, and do everything else in light purples with a couple of violet tulips here and there.

Ditto. My BM''s are wearing Black, and my FG is wearing white, with a black sash AND a chamagne sash., which is our accent color.

My friend''s FG wore the cutest little white dress with big black polka dots and a black sash. She was adorable!

I peeked at your wedding, to see your flower girl. She was so adorable! I definitely see how the black sash works now.

You were the most lovely bride I think I''ve ever seen.

Oh Gypsy, I get it now!! Thank you so much for explaining this to me! I would have never thought to use a saturated color on the BM''s and then soft colors elsewhere. This might take black out of the running.

Thanks again.

Another thing to keep in mind is that colors look very different on people depending on the fabric chosen, and the fabric chosen also helps get the ''feel of the season'' right.

So for a spring wedding, I''d stick to a silk shantung (if you want structure and some shimmer), a georgette, or a chiffon (both of which flow) for the BM dresses. Avoid crepes and satins in spring if you can.

Shantung does show sweat easily though. So personally I''d stick to georgette or chiffon which usually hide sweat better because they are matte and lighter so the dry quicker.

Plus georgette and chiffon typically just look better in terms of fit. Unless it''s a very high quality satin, the dresses frequently look cheap and your BMs won''t be happy. Silk Charmeuse is another lovely fabrc for spring but it''s very unforgiving in terms of fit and shows sweat easy.

If you decide to stick with the black for the bridesmaids, while not super traditional, I think these little girls look adorable in their black dresses. link

Also here is one with yellow flowers, where the little girls wore white dresses with black sashes Link
