Hi there-
I am fairly new here and am so overwhelmed with so much info here....my bf is not into shopping for a ring or anything of that sort. He says go and buy what I want - with a boundary of course- so being the detailed female Virgo I am it has taken me forever to finally settle on cut style etc i want. I actually find myself coming full circle to finding an antique cushion where when I first started my search was looking at cushions....then I discovered the old euro cut! Then now am absolutely in love with the old antique cushion or squarish mine cuts! There has been so much info on here so need help synthesizing everything floating in my head and need your help. He has told me to start with $4k to find myself a diamond.... Or so...I can play....It will be placed in a yellow gold setting...so want to find an absolute beautiful diamond as close as I can get to a carat and a half that will be the center of attention.... Color between J and L?...I have seen a beautiful m at single stone so am open as well..whiter is better but really the facets and the way it faces up is key! From what I keep hearing on here the fire and brilliance are the key.
Where do you recommend I go and find one?..any recommendations as I search? I need some help getting my search on started...vendors? Reccs? Anything? Am I realistic in my desire?
Any help is deeply appreciated!
Thank you!

Just to make sure i am reading you right, you want a 1.5ct vintage cushion for 4k?

Have you already been to www.oldworlddiamonds.com?? Adam is well regarded on PS and often has other diamonds not listed on the web. Worth a phone call ( and I stress PHONE CALL... because email replies can take a while... ) but call and chat on their 1-866# and see what he can do for you. He's found a lot of AMAZING diamonds for PSers here!

^ This.

And www.jewelsbyericagrace.com :))

Dropping down in color, and clarity (to eyeclean) will be necessary to get that size of stone for your budget. I was checking comps on my ring that I am considering selling just last night and it looks like 1.75s are sitting around $8k. Good luck, take your time and find a stone that speaks to you.

Hi there-
I am not necessarily saying a 1.5 carat for 4k but as close as I can get would be good..l guess size matters but also want good quality...maybe about a 1.25? Not sure....I will call Adam at OWD and Erica at jewelsbyericagrace to see what if they have anything...any other places to look?
Thanks everyone with so much knowledge! Appreciate it!

Singlestone also has access to nice old stones.

Honestly, after all the ebay successes I have seen and my own personal success (including my conquest today) ... I think I will only ever buy old stones off ebay moving forward. The prices can't be beat and if you know what you are looking for ... the quality is pretty much hard to match too. All you need is to enlist the amazing ebay stars like Fortekitty, DreamerD ... you are set!

This is all true. I wouldn't feel comfortable enough on my own to pull the trigger on a large ebay purchase, but I definitely would if a few key PSers said that it looked good to them. You can save a bundle if you have the search skills and patience to find the perfect item.

And Charmy...have you made a thread for your day's success? :naughty:

This is good to hear...I have been trolling eBay for some time but have lost many not certain if they were good deals and jumping fully in....how can I get the help of fortekitty or dreamerz? I need some help with ebay trolling for a great deal....I am an ebayer for sure but just not versed in purchasing a diamond....

When you find something that has potential, post PHOTOS of it here. Do not post the listing. Lurkers will buy things right out from under you if given half a chance. :nono: Title the thread with "antique" or "old cut", and wait to hear from the likes of Dreamer, Yssie, ForteKitty, maybe Mara if she's around. There are some ladies here worth their weight in old cuts! :))

Hi there, i am new to this - what an interesting group - truly obsessed!

You should be able to find a 1.2 - 1.3 (but no larger) carat old-cut within budget and if you are mounting in yellow gold it should have the effect of lifting the colour by at least 3 grades. If you throw some fluorescence into the equation it will lift the colour even more. so keep an eye out for that.

Good luck

I've seen it go both ways - sometimes color is "lifted" with yellow gold (contrast) and sometimes it adds more yellow to the stone by showing through the pavilion. My M/N/O is in platinum and it makes the stone appear a bit whiter. I think it must depend on the exact optics of each individual stone. We've definitely has examples posted of yellow to white gold conversions - someone's 5 stone AVCs in L comes to mind. The difference was HUGE!

Hmmm---interesting....do you mean that going to a AVC in yellow to platinum was a noticeable whitening or yellowing??? Can you explain this? Also...where can I find that posting?

I am currently reviewing an AVC in j color- it is gorgeous- it faces up really beautifully- it looks very white- one of the best diamonds I have seen! I can see the color when i turn it to the side but when looking at it direct I swear it is so white and cut beautifully- it is a 1.27. I am thinking of keeping it.
I have had Mark at ERD look for a stone in my price range to what the AVC was, it took him a while to get me a stone that was similar- I really love the antique cushion cut....he got something similar but when you compare the ASETS the AVC is definitely better- more defined balanced lots of red. When I look at the ERD it is darker in the table....It has a better clarity and color- (one clarity higher and 2 colors higher) but the AVC is gorgeous! I have tried it on in different lighting etc. It should have an inclusions I can see, but can only see it when I am 6 inches away and tilting it a certain way....i know where it's at after 4 days of looking for it with my naked eye! The one Mark brought up was also more expensive by about $900. But I am considering keeping this AVC...it is lovely....and I am not an expert- but the AVC is gorgeous I love looking at it. I am no inclusion expert but it is the color i love.

charmypoo are you serious i haven't seen one ebay auction that was a good deal with out it being enhanced. I would never consider buying diamonds on ebay.

I think ginger mean's packrat's ring. She had the stones in yellow gold but switched to white and it really made a difference. You can see photos of both in this thread (second page has the old setting in yellow): https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/packrats-avc-three-stone-and-wedding-band-by-single-stone.180821/

Oh my- what a difference!!??
The AVC in a yellow gold looked so yellow?!?!?
I don't want my diamond to look yellow though...this is my engagement ring.. I wouldn't mind it yellow in a RHR though... :naughty:

Can anyone tell me if an AVC J color set in yellow gold really look yellow? or it all depends on what???
I am going to post some pics of my AVC for you all to see.....taking pics as we speak!

Mine came from ebay, and it turned out better than the described specs by quite a bit. The first few pages has it in the original setting. It was set into a ring on page 6 so there are a ton more pictures between there and the end. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-amazing-holy-grail-9-9mm-oec.178975/ I have also purchased many (maybe too many!) GIA graded diamonds from ebay over the years. ;))

THIS!!!! Except I did everything through email- bought the diamond and the setting. I don't think I ever called till I had to pay for the thing. And I thought Adam was fantastic at email. But I guess maybe I caught him on a good several weeks. But definitely try OWD and JbEG!

I sent Adam emails to see if there was anything in comparison to this AVC- in the same price range to compete. I know they are different cuts but was open to anything to compete in similar size etc.
I didn't get a response though? I am on the west coast so getting in touch has been a challenge given my down time coinciding.... I can try again.

Fortekitty- I am def an ebayer- I am leaning towards taking my chances for other projects as I progress- I am only hesitant with my engagement ring diamond being ebay bought and taking chance. I have seen your deals and agree- but waiting to have them come around may be in the stars later. I will def outreach to see what you think of some as I am always saving- pendants, RHR's, earrings etc...are on my list to come after!
:D

So here are some pics.
This diamond does have an inclusion - but I do not see it until I am 6 inches away and looking in daylight with sun out. It took me 5 days to train my eye to catch it without a loupe. It is a 1.27 j color AVC- 6.4X 6.38- about. Very square.
WHat do you think?
Color and cut were important and given my budget it is just right...I can't upload?? ahhh...
I pressed to insert photos and tagged them but they do not save??

okay figured it out....i was impatient...hehe

kept clicking....and didn't see any saving....didn't realize it took a while.

As for pix--here they are:
They are all with lighting coming from the back of the stone through windows...sunny etc. It was funny.
I was taking pix near my place where I have a memory area of my grandma...i pull my angel cards here every so often.
After taking pix I decided to pull a card to see what my angels thought. The message was triumphant! Like saying "you got it!"
You will see one of the pix with the ring on top of the card...it's my little message I think.
:P

What do you think ladies?

I like it. Great AVC. Looks nice and white. I1's can be a great stone even with the inclusion. Won't be noticed by anyone but you in certain lighting/angles.

Try Diamond Zone from Chicago, they also have a store on ebay called my diamond zone.

Ariel...it is very white! I see the tint when it's against the white ...but I think in pics it is more noticeable..irl I do not see the tint so much...but I do not have a trained eye possibly....when face up it looks so white and even whiter with lighting in the evening or as the sun goes down....a while back I fell in love with an m colored 1.8 old miners cut in a yellow gold setting at single stone ...it had a "birthmark" which I think is beautiful...pati at single stone said "it's like a beautiful woman with a beauty mark...very unique.."..I loved the idea which made me think of not fearing the inclusion... It reminded me of my grandmother with her "cielito lindo" mark...that ring was way out of my price range...but it was so gorgeous....made me fall for cushions...I think this avc hit me like that one but in a range we set budget wise....my bf is an old world Italian who loved the beauty mark idea...he said it would make sense to be able to "know" your stone...like an ID I guess....and when you look at it the stone is so clear...giving off those rainbow facets...in all the different lighting I have tried it in each shows a different beauty,....

FOrekitty it is a gorgous stone

Yeah fortekitty! That is a gorgeous 3+ carat oec I have seen!! Wow! I think I missed your link the first time..all I can say is WOW!
