WOW! How absolutely bizarre to log on (haven't in AGES) and see your name on a post! And this time, I wasn't a vain little villian who posted it...
I have actually been incommunicado for a reason. Issues, issues...Actually, one relevant issue I can say is that I have decided to quit my job (in the real world) and actually take classes for my Gemology degree with GIA. I have been pondering it for a while, and sometimes things just make you shake things up and decide, hey, let's do what I really enjoy for a change!
DIAMONDS!
Update: Parents-in-law are coming in for a visit this month (first time meeting my dad-in-law), so I have been franticly using my new found time off to prepare. Stripping my closet of old clothing, knick knacks and junk, buying new linens, new towels, new kitchen items...(my vain attempt to pass off as someone who can actually cook)
...
So I am back, oddly, i just signed in to find out Wink's number to call, as I recently placed an order with him for a CZ, and was anxiously awaiting it...
Thanks for the concern though guys...
Oh yeah, STILL no wedding date or solid plans...*rolls eyes*
Glad you are well Nicrez, I know this internet stuff is so impersonal, but we really do become accustomed to seeing posts from familiar people...you are one of them! Good luck with your studies.
how exciting, GIA classes...do they have one local to you? I was tempted to do the same recently...but you can only do virtual for so long before you have to drive to take tests etc. don't be a stranger gal! it has been strangely silent without you around...
Thanks FIner Things! So sweet! Actually, I am wait listed to get into a Gemology program at GIA NYC before next year...seems they are booked up solid here. Carlsbad isn't so booked, it seems...must be because they have MANY more classes...
Actually I seriously considered the whole moving out to Carlsbad for 6 months, after they told me they didn't offer the GJG (Graduate Jeweler Gemologist) program in NYC...It's a CA thing only...Even Rand was thinking about letting me go out there... In the end we decided it's not likely to happen this millenium, as he and I would be useless without each other. We both get sad when we are at work, and we miss each other....
(I know, I know, VOMIT...)
BUT, I may end up getting my GG here in NYC, and try to take design courses at either NYU or Parsons, who also offer classes. It's SO painful, considering I have a very lucrative and financially stable career I wasn't all that excited about. I will be making close to nothing when I graduate, so that's frightening, but Rand has been UNBELIEVABLY supportive with this, and he is really gungho now...
So maybe one day when I post, I'll actually know what I'm talking about...?
VH, it's a scary scary thing to leave what you have been doing for years to be poor, and study stones....Hopefully I will be taking classes soon, but in the meanwhile, it's good that I am taking this time off. Again, for my parents-in-law to visit, I will spend A LOT of time with them, while they visit for a month...
Basically, I am trying to find someone to bribe or blackmail to get me into the full-time GIA courses BEFORE 2005...
I could take night classes, and just the diamonds course, or even on-line courses, but I truly wanted to go through all this in one shot, and it's tough! (AND expensive!)
But, maybe I can add some value to conversations about diamonds and colored stones as I pick up things. I am SO excited! Actually, I ordered the CZ version of the Jubilee from Wink, and I saw your icon and am just DYING to see that bad boy in person (even if it's the CZ version). That Jubilee WILL be on my shopping list when I get some connections (and some more money!
I read a story in the Post over the weekend about folks who've made friends by playing various games online. There was a story about a guy who noticed one of the regulars wasn't posting and the group collectively figured out how to track her down. Sure enough, she was in a diabetic crisis & they rescued her!
Anyway, gemology sounds exciting. I recently had my rings appraised and it was really fun to meet her & talk about stones.
How fun! I'm finding myself more and more addicted to diamonds, and would LOVE to leave behind the "real world", but seeing as I haven't finished my Ph.D. I think I need to stick it out a bit longer
I was just thinking the other day when someone posted about a Radiant that you were mysteriously silent!
Glad to know all is well with you and you are embarking on a brand new life! Very exciting, and I envy you! To be that close to all those diamonds every day, sounds like a dream.
I would love to be joining gemology classes since I have been developing a huge interest in GIA myself, except my poor husband couldn't go through another career change with me. Four years ago I decided to leave the business world and become a certified Pilates instructor, which meant a great deal of time in NYC!! I opened my own studio a year and a half ago and am so incredibly glad to be out of big business that I feel like a new person!
I know you won't regret your decision and congratulations!
Also, enjoy getting to know your new extented family, it's great that you can spend so much time with them.
