Where is the diamond district in NYC?

This sadly uncultured westerner will be visiting NYC for the very first time next week! I won''t be there long--one day, to be exact, the women in my family are just going to meet up and catch a Broadway play, lol--but I''d like to stop by the diamond district while I''m there. Only, I don''t know where that *is*.

Is it a street? A set of streets? Is it an enclosed building, like a mall? Is it like a diamond flea market in the back alleys with callers hanging out in the doorways? lol...

I am so excited to see this diamond mecca while visiting the Big Apple!

goldengirl, you ARE golden! since you'll be catching a play, you'll be around 44th/broadway - and therefore you're within walking distance to 47th/Sixth

just a couple of blocks up and an Avenue & you're set - no subway necessary!

Hmmm, well, I called my mom to find out what theater we'll be at--Gershwin's, which mapquests to about a 2-minute drive! (Okay, so like at 15-minute walk!) How perfect is that?? I couldn't have planned it better if I'd TRIED!

Get to the city early if you can, so you have plenty of time to window shop

the City may never sleep but all those shops close 6ish or 7ish...
