Hi there! Is its a prong or bezel setting? Sapphire is a pretty tough stone, maybe u can check with some jeweler from your area, if they are confident in setting it for you? And see if you can see some of the settings he has done? It is not easy to scratch a Sapphire, hence I am not too worried. Gd luck! I understand, I had a tough time looking for a competent bench:)

Thanks, i believe it's a prong setting. Should I just call all local retailer jewelers? Anyone out there have any good experiences setting stones at a local jeweler in socal?

Are you close to downtown LA? I'd try one of the setters on the Mezzanine level St Vincent Jewelry Center on Hill St.

I usually bring both the setting and stone to my local jeweller to set. It shouldn’t be an issue since your stone is a sapphire (most commonly set coloured stone) and the setting is a prong style. Unfortunately, I am not familiar enough with the SoCal area enough to make any recommendation.

Are you near LaVerne, CA? Rodeo Jewelers on Foothill Blvd. Ask for Koko. He is wonderful and talented also.

Hey, how did the stone turn out in real life? Do you like it? I would guess you do since you're having it set.

Sorry for taking a while to reply but I've been busy but hmm, I'm in San Bernardino, CA which is not too far from where I'm at. Any idea how much cost to get it set there? Also, I do like the stone and I hope my girlfriend likes it as well :| I was thinking of going to Emerson and Farrar in Redlands on a whim but I don't know. What's funny is that after I bought the pink sapphire I seen other princess sapphires in different colors by odyssey that looked really nice but I had to get the pink because it will match perfectly with the necklace I got her for v-day.

Ok I called a local jeweler in Redlands and they quoted me to set my sapphire roughly around $212. That seems rather steep but I don't know much about getting a stone set. Moonstruck how much does Rodeo Jewelers charge to set stones? Or does anyone else have any suggestions?

Please don't go for the person who offers you the lowest price. Squarish stones are notorious for being problematic to even moderately experienced bench people. Mall stores typically contract to the cheapest labour possible, and I sure wouldn't eat anything cooked in those kitchens, if you know what I mean.
Every major city in North America has clusters of jewellery professionals who work in close proximity to each other, usually in office buildings near city centres. These people don't send work out, they do it there. Often, the person you speak with is the one who will be performing the service.
One thing you should be conscious of..potential breakage/damage. The jeweller will discuss their liability policy with you.You may need to ask. Most will not accept liability on this sort of service. The ones that tell you, "No problem" are the ones to stay away from.

$212 seems steep. Do they have an in-house benchperson? Does this person do his own custom design work? I am asking (as should you) to somewhat gauge the skill of the benchperson. I would not bring the sapphire to be set at a place where the setting work is "farmed out".

Well it seems as though I should of listened to you guys as I went to a certain jeweler to get it set by a recommendation and now I have black spots on my sapphire. It is very noticeable from the side and I feel sick to my stomach

What are my options if they can't get the tool marks polished out? could I just get another 5mm princess stone for the setting and have the pink one taken out and have a new sapphire put in it's place? I'll be sure to let you guys know what the jeweler says about this as well.

Black spots on the pink sapphire? What are those?

I have no idea, maybe some tool marks? If they wont come off with a good polish, is it possible that I can just take the stone out and replace it with another similarly sized sapphire?

It is always possible to replace the stone with another; it's a matter of time (to find another princess cut which is uncommon) and cost. I don't suppose you have a picture of the black spots?
