Where to get sapphire engagement ring

I am looking for sapphire engagement ring. A relatively plain wedding band that "fits" with it would be real nice too. My budget is small, certainly no more than $1000 and hopefully a few hundred dollars short of that. My girlfriend''s ring size is small, only 4.5, and she doesn''t like the look of a typical "solitaire" where the ring sticks way out of the hand. That would just get too much in the way. Some diamond accent looks real good too. She prefers white gold to yellow, and platinum is probably too expensive.

We did some looking in town yesterday. I did like the look of some from Zales, but, apparently, folks on this website hate this company. Unfortunately, my question is where can I find a nice-looking small, sapphire ring? I am not necessarily opposed to online, but I see that as risky for this type of investment. Since my budget is small, I don''t see much benefit in buying the setting separate from the stones and assembling it that way. Can you help me? Remember, I am not concerned that the stone has to be at the zenith of quality. Just something that looks fine and will endure.

You can get a very nice piece within the constraints that you describe. I would definitely do this over the net, but this is just me and Pricescope.

A low set ring would be either a basket setting or some sort of bezel (full or half bezel...). The cross-prong settings also fit the bill nicely.

Do you think the style of setting below would do? The setting is platinum with some small diamond accents on the side (found at LINK) and the sapphire picture I used to make it look realistic comes from HERE. The respective stone has a pretty high color rating and I would expect at least this from a 6-7mm sapphire in a 1k ring

Most jewelers woudl order ring settings from suppliers (as opposed to making them from scratch) anyway, so if one found in a catalog online is what you want, it is easy to tell a local jeweler to order it - most of times this would work. Sapphires are best appreciated in person and you do not have to know allot to pick up a nice one. Just remember there is no need to end up with one that does not look pleasingly blue (not to dark or graish) or has obvious defects of cutting or clarity. A stone described to have "slight inclusions" should have them well hidden and hard to see without magnification - 'though the one at Multicolour makes a good example of desirable sapphire regardless of where you will end up getting yours.

This one is sold as is (platinum, diamond accents and sapphire of desirable quality - better shown in the hand picture on the SITE than this) for exaclty $1001. The setting is farely low - all 7mm of it. You will likely get a few refferences about Fay around here also.

Between Taigem, Multicolor, and Creativegem (the three larger gem businesses online I ever tried on) this turned out the nicest. How often do you find a seller willing to give extensive detail about the imperfections of his wares? Surely I kept them in mind.

Besides, it seems that many interesting new types of gem material appear in top specimens at Multicolor faster than anywhere else where I could take notice (without scoring trade news and being anywhere in this trade that is).

I would be happy to learn your impression on this business, of course.

I live in Monterey, California. The Edwardian ring is interesting, but I don't think my girlfriend would like the high "crown" look. We went looking in town Friday, but I should have asked for measurements of the stone. I see 7 mm and have difficulty picturing how that would look, not on a hand, but on her hand. Maybe this next weekend, I can give y'all more guidance. Sorry for the delay.

Only know the first two that you listed. Thaigem is to them like Wallmart is to us, lots of stuff, pretty cheap prices. Multicolour is like that really good Italian place that a friend tells you about. Tucked away, tastes great, does not have everything but what you order is good. I will see him next week and tell him that you are talking good things.

If a bezel set suits her taste, how about something similar to Colored Gemstone Nut's creation for his wife. It is one of my favorites in the folder. Perhaps a sapphire center stone with smaller diamond sides would look good and keep you in your budget. It is featured in this thread:
