Hi everyone!

I was going to ask this question in the weekly workout thread at the Family and Home Forum, but I thought I would get more responses if I posted here
2.gif

I eat pretty healthy and have recently gotten "serious" about exercise. I guess I''ve always been active, but it''s off and on. I have finally been disciplined with myself and have been going to the gym for the past 4-5 months at least 4 times per week
36.gif

Now this is the problem. No matter what I do I can''t get rid of those 5-10 pounds that are just so annoying!!!....so I thought maybe I needed to change some eating habits and see if that gives my metabolism a "boost"!....in order to see more results from my workouts and lose a couple of pounds.

So after hearing some things about Whey Protein, I bought some at the supermarket today (Designer Protein Whey, French Vanilla flavor). I just tried it (with fat free milk) and it wasn''t bad at all!....But I have many questions :)

Do any of you consume Whey protein? have you seen/felt results? (if so, what kind of results?) How much do you take per day and at what times?

Thanks in advance

Mandarine..unrelated to whey protein...it was very hard for me to drop any weight while working out...but i kept at it for a few months straight and finally it started to happen. what was really happening was my body was getting rid of fat and converting it to muscle! also i did shake up the food thing a bit by doing a veggie detox thing for a week one month and that actually kicked my body into dropping 3 lbs that week (right away actually). AND i bumped up my workouts to 6x a week from 3x a week. so really my body needed a bit of a kick in the butt. but for me weight is not really what it's about anymore. i only lost 7 lbs according to the scale at the gym, but i went from a size 10 to a 6! so obviously i had some fat that needed converting...hahaha!! now i just go by my measurement and my clothes..the scale is unreliable. i tested my body fat at the gym recently and it was ~21ish...which is the end of 'lean'. 22-28 is average. so i feel pretty good knowing that and wearing a 6 for the first time since i was in my early 20's!
5.gif

and hello girlfriend, you just posted your picture in the other thread and you do not need to lose any weight!! i actually looked at that picture and thought wow she looks awesome (and thin!). so whatever you are doing, just keep it up and you'll be fine.
2.gif

oh but on the whey protein thing, rod takes it i believe. also i had a great looking recipe for whey thin pancakes with no dairy or eggs and with fruit and i meant to try it but kept forgetting and now i can't find it. maybe i will take a peek around. since i work out so much now (5-6x a week) i need lots of protein to rebuild my muscles and am always trying to find new ways to get it.

fiber

haha...thanks for the compliments Mara...but the pictures just didn''t show my latin side....if you know what I mean
2.gif

Maybe I should try that veggie detox!. Did you just eat veggies all week?
6.gif
even in the mornings?. I guess I could do it, I like ALL veggies!!!!

Right now I''m working out 4 times per week in addition to walking everyday for 30 minutes or so with my little monster, I mean doogie
9.gif

I know the scale is unreliable but I just haven''t even seen a change in size!.....people that haven''t seen me in a while do say they see a difference...but it hasn''t been a difference that I can see on my measurements!. I''m finally at a point where I feel bad if I don''t go to the gym (I was never like that! hehe) so I don''t want to get discouraged by not seeing some real results!

Thanks for the tips and tell me more about the detox diet pleaseee!

fiber

hehe that was short and sweet

. I actually have been putting ground flax seeds in my cereal everyday for the past two years or so...which has done wonders for my cholesterol (not that it was ever bad, but now it''s very good!!!)...and that also has fiber. I also eat a whole grain cereal in the morning (Oat Bran Flakes, Complete)...and eat a LOT of Brocoli

This is unrelated to whey protein as well because I don''t personally use it, but if I were you I would try eating more organic food. I know it sounds weird, but so much LESS goes into organic food that it can actually help you drop weight (from what I''ve seen... obviously I am not an expert). And a lot of it tastes so much cleaner, you''d be surprised! Just a thought, from seeing friends and myself eating more foods that are organic and seeing the subsequent weight change. As for the whey protein, I don''t know if it helps with weight loss, but it is good for you so I would go ahead and put it in the smoothies! I have also heard that certain herbal teas can help with losing a little around the middle? I am not sure WHICH teas, so maybe someone can chime in here and offer that suggestion as well.

*M*

PS You can cut even more fat out of the smoothie by using light vanilla soy milk or rice milk. Soy milk has the same amount of calcium as regular milk, so you aren''t cheating yourself out of anything. Rice milk is a little sweet and lighter, but I love it. Hope I could help a little.

mandarine, the detox thing was something that a bunch of PS''ers did for a week about 2 months ago...we did two of them but the 2nd one people (me included!) mostly caved after a few days. but the first one was very successful. it was basically a modified detox where you cut out all meats, fish, dairy, sugar, and salt. so you eat mostly veggies, fresh fruit, and brown rice, i adapted it to allow fresh granola, wheat bread and pastas, etc. but basically it''s just kind of getting back to eating more of the ''basics'' that is easier for your body to break down than eating all the processed stuff people do nowadays. i made a lot of stir fry with rice things...hehee. i also replaced my dairy with soy milk which was something different. oh and i was finally able to cut all sugar out of my coffee that week too AND i have stuck with it since. that was my real milestone!!

thing is for me i already eat pretty healthily with lots of fiber and fresh foods and fruits, but it still kicked my body into a different gear i think. anyway we did it for 5 days and the second time for like 3-4 days. after that i was like yanno i already eat pretty darn healthy so i don''t need to do this...hahaa. but it was fun to try a time or two. it doesn''t hurt really as long as you eat enough to sustain yourself and your workouts that week...it''s not about starving yourself or whatever, but more about giving your body some ''easy'' stuff to digest so it can cleanse itself.

Thanks!!!. I do also eat a lot of organic (not all because some of it is just way too expensive...but the things that I eat often, I eat organic (chicken, strawberries, milk, eggs and some of the veggies).

I know what you''re saying though and I''m really trying to go organic whenever I can...it is just so much better for you!!!

I guess I will try this Whey protein can I bought and see how that goes!. If anyone out there has some thoughts on Whey, please do share

I will definitely try it
36.gif
. I have a friend at work and we always do things like this together...so I will try to convince her to do it with me. It might be good to do before the Holidays too. For me I think the hardest will be to cut out the Dairy...because I just can''t have coffee without it and I would miss my breakfast!...but it''s only a week so I''m sure I''ll survive
37.gif

Like you, I already eat very healthy that''s why it''s hard to make changes!. I wouldn''t starve...I love food too much
18.gif
just want to get the most out of my workouts and be as healthy as I can be!...I think my body just needs a little kick in the butt like you said!

Mandarine: I am a Lifetime Weight Watcher, and I teach aerobics classes, and since I had my son, I''m trying to get the last of the weight off. (almost there).

Anyhoo...the 8 guidelines for healthy living from WW works for me, and got that sniggly "last 8 lbs" off, that put me into a teensy size 4 and I held it until I got pg.

1) drink 8 glasses of H20 a day
2) eat 5 servings fruits and veggies
3) choose high fiber breads, pastas, etc. (no white stuff if you can)
4) exercise
5) portion control (3oz meat = deck of cards, 1/2 cups of rice or pasta cooked = 1 serving, 1oz cheese = thumb)
6) stop eating when you are comfortable--never get "stuffed".
7) never let yourself get so hungry you are "starving" -- you''ll overeat
8) I forget it, but I think it''s plan to have snacks around or something.

Anyhoo....5, 6, & 7, are what kills most people''s weight loss efforts.

Also, I lost 10lbs one year just by cutting my creamer out of my coffee in the morning. That International Delights Fat Free creamer packs a whollop of calories that you don''t realize. It was so hard to do, but now I adore my coffee black. (I put cinnamon grounds or some vanilla bean in the grounds for some extra pizazz).

Another "sneaky" calorie add on is juice. I NEVER drink juice. In fact, I NEVER drink anything with calories in it, except skim milk and wine. (and the occasional martini if I''m out celebrating)

An extra 250 calories a day can = .25lbs gain a week =1lb a month ....so that juice and creamer is really packing it on our booties.

Madarine, I was one of those "detoxers" Mara mentioned! I actually have the book "The 7 Day Detox Miracle" and had brought it up on a workout thread a few months ago...so in talking about it on the WWT we kind of adapted the "diet" from there. It''s kind of a good guideline in that it basically tells you to eat mainly fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains, and excludes animal products like meat, fish, poultry, and dairy for a week or a few days. The book itself recommends doing a two day water fast and then only eating fruits, veggies, and brown rice/brown rice products as carbs for the other five days. If you do a search for "detox" I''m sure one of those threads where we did it will pop up. (Sorry I am super lazy and not computer literate enough to provide you with a link, he hee.)

I see nothing wrong with doing some supplements for weight loss, but like Mara said, those stubborn "vanity" pounds will only come off when you make the actual commitment and stop worrying about a number on the scale. I don''t know much about your "case" but if you''re anything like me, there are always those few extra pounds that just seem to linger no matter what you do...it takes a bit of a shakeup to your diet and exercise program to really get rid of them.

it's so funny you mention calories diver because that is what has gotten me to where i am now. i started counting calories after realizing that doing 'low carb' or 'low fat' or whatever was just not cutting it. plain and simply, i decided to test the whole 'eat less than you expend' kinda thing to lose weight. and that has really made all the difference. plus i actually LIKE counting calories. i keep an excel spreadsheet and just update it once at around noon and then at night and it lets me track what i am eating. but really i am a creature of habit, i eat mostly the same things all the time since i know they work for me. i also drink a ton of water, don't drink juices and sodas, try to always eat multi-grain or dark breads, pastas, etc. i've cut sugar out from my coffee which was HUGE for me, drink iced tea with no sugar. try to have fresh fruits even during winter.

the funny thing is that since i am exercising a fair amount now and just doing the calorie intake thing, i actually am SUPPOSED to be eating a lot of carbs and fat and protein because i am burning so much of it during my workouts. so it's kind of funny because all i have to do is eat pretty healthily and just know the calories of something, and it doesn't matter if it has 10g of fat or whatever in it. i even eat unhealthy fats, just not that often, aka once a week. i used to always think 'oh lowfat is the way to go'..it's like drilled into your head or something. so even now sometimes when i look at something i think omg 4g of fat per serving! then i remember, okay wait i am supposed to have 40-60g of fat per day ...i can afford 4g for XYZ. hehee. it's hard to uncondition yourself to think that fat is always bad. this is especially true for something like salmon which is the 'good fat'.

the other interesting thing since becoming a calorie watcher is how many USELESS calories are in so many of the things that people eat or drink. useless meaning they really do nothing positive for your body. sugars, enriched flour products, corn fillers. i am a TOTAL fiber whore now, i love things with fiber in it...hehee. i try to eat a multi-grain or high-fiber breakfast, and i snack on 1/2 luna bars or whatever to get a protein and fiber boost during the day. i had no idea that a bagel had so many calories, or that a large white tortilla aka think chipotle burrito tortilla, SOLELY the tortilla has like 400 calories. that is basically one meal for me. just the tortilla. totally useless! sure it has like 2g of fiber but that's about it. avocados have good fat and protein in them but they are packed with calories. one medium avocado is 350 calories. hold the guac! i am obsessed with looking things up online to see what is in them and how it affects my body. it doesn't mean i don't eat them (aka i still eat guac!!) but at least i know what is going into my body.

so anyway, just being more educated on things has made a huge difference for me. i have found some AWESOME salad dressings that are low-cal but not too low-fat (since i am supposed to be eating a fair amount of fat per day) so they are super tasty and yet they don't blow my calorie intake out. things like that incorporated into daily life work for me. i still eat pies and have desserts when we go out but i also try to make 'smarter' choices at dinner and keep 'smarter' snacks around for us and similar. i think doing that long-term will give you more benefits than just what the scale registers when you weigh in.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

I thought my Hubby had sneakily become a PSer when I saw this title as he is obsessed with his whey shakes as Miss Mara knows! Heaven forbid!

To be serious, he takes whey after weightlifting as it is supposed to help the muscles bulk up, thats all I know about it. He has creatine first then 40 mins after his whey shake.

I use whey protein. I put it in lots of things. (Along with ground flaxseeds) stews, chilli, cereal, oatmeal, pancakes, waffles. You get the idea. Anything I can hide it in.

I love it in a morning fruit smoothie. Add a few berries, some whey, and plain nonfat yogurt. The kids even love when they have it for breakfast. Somedays I will add extra berries and just use water to liquidify.....

Keeps you from getting hungry and takes the body longer to digest the carbs that get ingested with it.

wow!!!!!!!!

You guys are full of useful information!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mara - Congratulations on going from a size 10 to a 6!!!!!!! that is a pretty amazing accomplishment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
36.gif
. If you''re working out a lot it might be worth looking into the whey shakes. I actually did a lot of erading last night and found that not only does it help build and strenghten muscles (because of the protein) but it also has a number of other health benefits. Whey protein is actually one of the first things us humans drink/eat when we come into this world!. It''s found in that early breast milk so you can only imagine how good it is for you.

This morning I decided to have less of my cereal (only 1/2 a cup with 1/2 cup of fat free milk) and then had the shake with the other 1/2 cup of milk and some strawberries. It was pretty good!!!. I''m going to try this, but I''m wondering if I should also have one shake after working out. I work out at night so it could be part of my dinner. Having it after a workout is suppossed to be really good.

You seem to be pretty good about counting your calories! I just can''t deal with counting and measuring my food (I''ve tried!). I know there are things I could do better and cut from my diet. I''m good about eating only wheat (not white) products...wheat bread (when I have bread), wheat pasta, wheat rice, etc.

Divergrrl - Wow, thanks for all the tips!!!!!. You mentioned one thing that I know I need to do. I used to have my coffee with fat free milk from home...but now I got into this habit of drinking coffee from the office and they have the half&half....and I''ve been using it
15.gif
. I really need to cut it out!. I don''t use sugar (I use Splenda). I know I will be better off not using Splenda either, but baby steps
28.gif
. I never drink juice or soda so I''m good there. I might try bringing some almonds or something to work so I have something to snack on. It''s hard at office environments...there is always a meeting (full of food), the birthday celebration, the goodbye celebration, the congratulations celebration...you get the idea! hehe.

Monarch64 - Thanks! I''ll do a search for the detox thread
1.gif
. I think what my body needs is excatly that, a shake up!!!

Lorelei - LOL! that''s funny about your hubby...but he may be on to something!. My FMIL is an organic-supernatural eater. She is on the obsessive side sometimes!....but she looks awesome and much younger than she erally is!...everything from her skin, to her body (she is nice and toned, not with big muscles). She sweras by having her whey shake in the morning with mixed berries and flax seeds. She has tried to get me to do it but I was beign very stubborn about "I need my cereal in the mornings"....hehe...Now I think I will have a small portion of my cereal and a light shake.

Eva17 - Is there a "better" time to take Whey?. In the mornings? after working out?. Is there a "limit" to how much I should take? (scoops/day). The can says 1-3 scoops 2-3 times daily...that seems like a lot. I know my body needs more proteing because I usually just have some protein during lunch (I have very light dinners). On the weekends I do eat more protein because I cook more.

Thank you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

M~

lol mandarine, i don''t measure my food, but i have some idea of how large portions should be. also i do eat a ton of salads and i have those figured out in terms of what''s in them and all that...and another cool thing is that much of TJ''s pre-packed stuff comes with nutrtional informationl on it! so it''s fresh and expires in a few days but they also put a label on it which is wonderful, whole foods does not do that with their labels so you never know what you are really eating in terms of fat/cals etc. another reason why i love TJ''s lately. also i snack on things like luna bars (1/2 of one really) which have nutritional info, yogurt, jello cups. also you can get an idea for fruits and calories online (aka 50 blueberries is 39 cals)..so i am sure my calorie counts are not always TOTALLY accurate but i know enough to get very close. so it''s kind of fun. i like trying to imagine what something equals then seeing how close i was as well. hehee. i''ve always loved doing calcs in my head.
2.gif

Mandarine: when I was an office gal (I''m a mommy now) I kept food in my desk & in the work fridge. I''d hit TJ''s and stock up once a week.

I''d keep Ezekiels sprouted grain bread with raisins in the fridge (so high fiber) & a jar of reduced fat peanut butter and have one slice with a thin spread (1tablespoons worth) of pnut butter with an apple and a cup of tea whenever I needed a snack or going to a meeting where I knew there would be food and I''d be tempted. The CEO of our company got to calling me "peanut butter n toast" but I told him it was brain food, so he''d get more out of me.

In my desk I''d keep a bag of Pirates Booty (I count points, not calories, a WW thing, its easier and helps you get your fiber) There are 4 servings in a bag, and each one is 2 points. Its a huge serving too. Like white cheddar cheetos kinda, only healthy and yummy.

I''d also keep Luna bars & like Mara, I''d only eat half.

I buy the big box of single serve oatmeal from Costco & kept those in my desk (still live on them) I''d just empty a pack into my coffee mug, use the hot water thingie and boom--breakfast or good snack.

My fruit was always, apples, oranges and bananas. For a week, I''d try to have about 1-2 pieces a day.

I found that if I snacked on high fiber or raw foods (baby carrots dipped in salsa...YUMMMMMMM) all day long, I didn''t reach for the doughnuts, candies, fudges, etc. that folks always brought in. Not being hungry helps.

I looked weird bringing in a shopping bag from TJs after my monday lunch hour, but hey, I looked weird in a size 4, so there ya go. I was also going to Weight Watchers with 4 other girls in the Marketing Dept, so since we all sat together, we really supported each other and someone always had a new snack idea.

Oh, and if I''m craving something BAD, like a good greasy burger & fries from our favorite pub, we just go and have it and I only try to eat half of it. (fries dipped in ranch of course). I won''t eat fast food, cuz I figure if I''m gonna do a burger, I''M GONNA DO THE BURGER! Or we have a restaurant here that is old and privately owned that is renowned for their desserts. I''ll order my luscious carrot cake with the decadent cream cheese frosting & eat half & box up the other to enjoy the next day.

I gave up having seconds and huge portions when I joined WW (and now I can''t stand that "stuffed" feeling), and that was a biggie.

Oh, the WW cookbooks & recipes (you get access to the recipes by joining online, I forget how much it is a month) are excellent. I make oatmeal cookies...3pts for 2 cookies and its all healthy, high fiber, and full of good fats, fantastic flavors, & good spices. No one ever knows I''m cooking out of WW cookbooks. (of course the best cookbooks are only sold at the meetings!) My DH loves everything I cook out of there for him, some of it is truly excellent.

Like my pork loin & pear saute with lemon vodka reduction sauce? OMG...BLISS.

Tuscan frittata? wonderful for brunch

HTH..

Jeannine

(I also love to jog...nothing rips off the pounds faster than running. I''m training for a half marathon with a running club starting in february. It''s geared towards slow beginners like me. 10minute mile, only ever ran 5k''s --3.1mi-- before. )

diver, you should check out my post in the WWT about running vs high incline walking. since i''m a calorie girl i have noticed that i can do the high incline walk for as long as someone next to me is running and it''s the same calorie burn. and i get a real burn from the incline so my butt shrank down. heehee. anyway it was just an interesting thing that i noticed after a few times of people running next to me.

oh and can you PLEASE post the oatmeal cookie recipe (does it have raisins in it? i love oatmeal raisin!!) from WW that you mentioned? i love making cookies but i don''t really know many healthy recipes that TASTE good. i''m all about the flavor. spices are fab.

i actually find that the whole counting calories and counting points thing is somewhat similar. most of the same things that are low in points are lower in calories and bad stuff. it''s the same kind of ''jist''...aka don''t care ''as much'' about fats and carbs and all that when you eat, just get your good stuff in and stay under a range and you are golden.

Oh, I was going to say I lost 3.4 lbs this last week with WW (it was over 2 weeks, I don''t have to weigh in weekly now that I''m lifetime, I go every other week) which is good...I decided I''ve been stuck in mommy mode long enough, and if I want to get the last of that babyweight off, I need to commit to going to my meetings. My "baby" is almost 2!!!!

Wow Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...I''m actually copying & pasting your entire note to my friend here at work!!! those are all great ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!. I don''t know why it never occured to me to bring in fruits and leave them handy at work! or other things to snack on, you have some great suggestions!!!

You can''t post about a recipe without giving us the secrets :) ..hehehe, just kidding....that pork loin sounds so YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Please do post the recipe! (and for the cookies too!!)

We don''t have TJs in FL
38.gif
39.gif
....my "nearest" Whole Foods is not that clsoe either, but the organic sections at the local supermarket are getting bigger each day
36.gif

Congrats on the 3.4 lbs!!!!!!!!!!
36.gif
and on training for a marathon!!!!!!!!! . I''ve also heard that running is great for losing weight. This is actually what one of the trainers said was the "best way" to lose those stubborn pounds....but she did say it was more effective to run outside (rather than in the threadmill). I''m not big into running but have started to like it a bit more lately ever since I started the new boot camp class (our instructor makes us run around the park before we start the actual training)....

I wish I could get into a habit of counting calories..maybe I need to give it another try!. I did go to a nutritionist when I went back home in May. I''m alreday at my "ideal" weight and my body fat is pretty low....but she did think I could lose a few pounds and gain a bit more muscle. She had recommended a very low calorie diet for the first few weeks just to shake up my metabolism. She had some great "meal plans" but to be honest I just didn''t follow it very well.

I eat pretty much the same everyday..hehe, so I think I need to mix it up and introduce different things. Since I started exercising I did notice that my cereal bowls started getting bigger! (I exercise at night and have light dinners...so i think my body was starving by the time it was breakfast time!). That''s one of the things I want to change...instead of having a huge bowl of cereal, have a small portion and compliment it with a whey protein shake with berries.

I loved all the "work" food advice! you guys are awesome and are getting me more excited about making some changes!!!!!

M~

Mandarine, I mentioned about your interest in the whey shakes to Hubby and for what it is worth, he said be cautious with them as they can be high in calories and might not really help you lose weight. Many bodybuilders use them to up the calories they need and protein for muscle growth, you wouldn''t bulk up much as you are a Ladee, but just handle with care! Lots of water, fruits and veggies and exercise as Mara and the others have suggested will knock off any odd poundage.

Thanks!

The one I bought is not too bad (I don't think) it's 90 calories and only 1.5 grams of fat and 2 grams of net carbs (sugars)...for one scoop (which is what I used this morning and it was prefect with half water and half fat free milk).

Bodybuilders drink them in MUCH higher quanitities so that might explain why your husband showed some concern. I'm not going for the big muscles look though
2.gif
..heheehe.

I do need to keep reminding myself to eat more fruits and drink more water!!!. I eat plenty of veggies but not so much fruit (other than the daily dose of strawberries in the morning
9.gif
)

I like diver's suggestion of bringing some fresh fruits to work. I will definitely start doing that!

Thanks for asking your husband!!!!!!!!!!!!!

M~

No problem! He takes one which adds ''mass'' whatever that means, the one you have sounds good on the calories so it should be alright.

Not whey related, but have ny of you checked out www.realage.com?

It is pretty cool and they send you weekly emails with tips, etc.

Now they have a special site for the book "You on a diet" and it has all kinds of great little tools. I love the meal planner because it does the calorie counting for you :)

Here is a link:

http://www.realage.com/doctorCenter/MealPlanner.aspx

(You might have to become a member to see the link, but it''s free and I think it''s worth it ;))

I''m not really choosing my menus there, but it''s good for ideas of meals, snacks, etc. Their main thing they say is to drop the balance and go for the tape measurement (yep, like you said Mara!)....and to get a buddy for exercising, etc. They also say you should sticky to havign a routine with your meals (eat the somewhat the same everyday) because it makes it easier to stay on track.
