I'm looking for black boots to wear for work & casual. They need to go with skirts & dresses...not looking for super dressy but dressy enough. I'm also looking for them to be comfortable and stable on ice & snow. I want them to actually be leather...not faux or suede. I found these 2 options. Which do you like better & why? Or do you have any other suggestions.

Left side is Rockport Lessel. Right side is Sofft Tyla.

I like the one on the left. I think the pointed toe is more feminine and sexy. They''ll look great with jeans too! I don''t live in the snow, so I wouldn''t know anything about practicality

They''re both cute! :) If I had to choose between the two, I would personally go with the Soffts; I think they look more feminine and could work with both pants and skirts/dresses. The Rockports look kinda Puss in Boots to me.. but it would also depend on what other style boots you have and what you''re looking for. Have you tried them on? Are they both equally comfy and toasty?

I like the ones on the right, the Sofft Tyla. Classic and clean. The ones on the left have kind of an odd shape to them, and I looks like they might be very wide around the calf? I don't think that they will look good with skirts. The strap on the back is also a bit too bulky for me... maybe if it was thinner, more dainty. I love the slim calf on the Sofft and the lacing up the back is very minimal but still elegant.

I own no other long black boots so these would be it for me. They need to be a "goes with almost everything" boot for me.

Meresal--Did your Tyla''s soften up after you wore them? I have the Tyla''s from Zappos right now and the leather seems stiff and somewhat bulky by my ankles. The footbed is really comfortable. How long have you had yours? How have they aged?

I am debating on trying the Rockports as an option. I like the Tyla''s except the toe box seems more rounded and a bit less sleek than I was hoping. But overall I really like the boot. Love the subtle lacing up the back and the comfort of them. I am definitely look for more feminine looking boots since I''ll be wearing these with wrap dresses.

I actually don''t have these boots. I did just go to Zappos and saw that the reviews for them are fabulous though. I have a pair of BCBG that I absolutely love, but the leather is almost completely worn at the toes, and for christmas my BF''s parents got me a new pair of paten leather J Choo''s. LOVE THEM... however, they are not worn for comfort. They are bulky around my ankle, but fit perfectly around my calf. Here is a link... they also have the round toe---

I think the slim fitting calf is what I like most about the Sofft. Also, I am a very big fan of the rounded toe. It is very in, and honestly, I find them easier to walk in then the "cockroach killing" points. They look great with pants, jeans, and skirts.

Which Rockports are you looking into?? I''m going to search a little more and see what else I can come up with too!!

Mer--Oh, wow those J Choo's are hot. Way more than I could ever spend on boots but wow, they would be fun, sexy, going out boots.

The Rockports I'm considering are the ones on the left..the Lessels. I don't want the pointy "roach kicking" toe either. But I'm not sure I"m loving the really round version. I'm relatively short..5'4" with calves around 14.4-15" and I've always been told not to wear super rounded shoes because they will make me look shorter. I do need boots that are going to be in style for several years so I get a lot of wear out of them.

I'm trying to find a heel on the boots that isn't really pointy but isn't real bulky either...so they look sleekier and dressier but I can still walk the brick alleys covered in ice on my way to work.

Thank you!! I love them, but BF offers to give me a foot rub every time I come home from work limping. haha, he''s great. By the end of the day... my feet have formed to them, and it hurts more to have them off. Maybe that''s how they get you addicted???

I saw another pic of the Rockports, and I like them a little bit more now. The strap isn''t as noticable as it seems in this photo.

What about these...
Only has a 14" circumference though,

Wow, I''ve never looked on Zappos before today... but, do you ever get irritated that it seems they don''t have ANYTHING is stock, or "avvailable" as they refer to it???

Mer--Funny you should mention Zappos being out of stock on things. The sudini boots you just posted were on my list but they don''t have them in my size.

I just googled them, and you can order them through Nordy''s. It shows that they are only marked at $199. I like these, and the heel looks like it will be great for rain, ice, snow, whatever.

They only seem to have this one in a size 8, but it''s on sale for only $99!

Pointy toes, supple leather around the heels, and a slim silhouette! If only the heel was a bit more substantial...

Just curious, have you decided to get boots after enduring the recent snow storm? :)

onvacation...I actually like both those boots. The heels are a bit slimmer than I was thinking but I''d be willing to try them. Sometimes slim heels can be reasonably stable. Unfortunately neither come in my size...7.5

The desire to get boots actually has come from a winter of endless snow. It has snowed probably 5 our of 7 days each week here since late Dec. I also scored some really cute wrap dresses on sale that I want to wear NOW and absolutely have to have boots to wear them.

Yay, boots! I really like the Rockport ones-for me they are a bit more versatile whilst having a bit of interest to them with the detail. I like pointy toes because I have short legs and little feet and pointy toes visually lengthen both.

My other tips would be get ones you can just zip up over your calves because a/ they will stretch and b/ they are soooo comfy if you are on your feet all day.

I like the soffts better. Something about the silhouette of the rockport is bothering me, but I can''t figure out why. Anyway, I think the soffts are gorgeous and I wish I had snow as an excuse to get them!

Well, now i have both the Soffts and the Rockports and home. What I really want to do is combine features from both boots. The Soffts make my feet look stumpy because of the round toe and the area right in front of the part where my foot connects to my leg is rather bulky. The Rockports toe shape is much better. Makes my foot look sleeker and the shape definitely looks better with both dresses & pants. But I really like the lace-up back on the soffts better than the Rockport snap decoration--although the shape of the Rockports in person doesn't show the calf being quite as wide...shape is similar to the soffts. The Rockports are a tad loose at the top so I know I'll probably need to take them in to make the top tigher by shortening the snap closure area. The Soffts are way more comfortable on the foot. There is more padding but the Rockports are not uncomfortable.

I was debating all weekend and finally decided to keep the Rockports. I think the toe shape part is more important in the long run than the back of the boot. Really wish I could keep both but I shouldn't..and it's super tempting because I found an online site that had the Soffts for $125 and Zappos price matched plus the 10%...so good deal compared to the $175....but still I shouldn't have 2 sets of black boots.

Glad you have boots now! Are you going to wear them with the wrap dress tonight?

I like to buy my boots half a size larger, and wear really warm socks inside. So even my pointiest boots feel like sneakers on my feet!

Pointed toe definitely.

Onvacation--Yep, I wore the new boots on Valentine''s Day last week. I have a really great wrap dress that my mother in law got me for Christmas. Who knew a mother in law purchased dress would turn out to be the best sexy-valentine''s day dress? Anyway, the boots looked great and my feet/legs were warm. They need to be broken in a bit around the ankle...soften up the leather etc. but since they''re leather, that should actually happen with wear.

And PennQ--You were right..pointy toe looked much better! Glad I kept looking to find these.

I bought my daughter some black boots for Christmas from Macy''s which are now on sale at a great price. They are the Kenneth Cole Reaction "Kiss Her" boot.

ID why would you need to take in the top of the boot??? I actually prefer it when my boots float a bit, I think it makes the calf area look slimmer than when the boot is tight at the top. I also have fairly skinny calves so I never can find zip ups that fit me snugly at all, pull ons from like Franco Sarto are typically the best for me. But anyway was just curious to see you say that as I think it''s sexy when you see a bit of space between the leg and the boot like when worn with dresses.

Personally I liked the look of the Rockports better esp with the top flap detailing. I want to get something like that as well but frankly I don''t wear boots that much and I already have 3 pairs (2 black, 1 brown) so I figure why ? hehee. Plus it''s time to be thinking about spring over here.

Oh Mara, I envy you LA girls! Spring is still so far away here.

My in-laws-to-be and my parents are scheming to meet in Chicago this weekend, and I just checked the weather: 16 degrees!

Guess who''s wearing tall, tall boots?
