Hi!

I am trying to decide which center stone I prefer -- cushion or princess.

Which stone do you prefer and why? Does anyone have a few pros and cons for each stone?

If you could pick one, which would you pick?

I really appreciate any help!

Also, does anyone know where I can see finished rings with each type of stone online?

Thanks a lot!

I used to like princesses, but now that everyone has them I've lost my taste for them. They will probably be sparklier than a cushion, though, and easier to find.

I love cushions, but there are more variations to the shape. I like cushions that are like antique cuts, but I've seen some cushions, such as the Cushette, that I really don't like all that much. I would think the hunt for a nice cushion would be harder than the hunt for a nice princess.

If you like the cushion shape chack out Regents...there is a little blurb about them on the P-scope home page...they have the brilliance of RB but the elegance of cushion...

I am not a princess

Best if Luck in your search

Both are nice... I I was looking for a squarish stone, I would pick a princess for a small stone and, around 2ct, I would go for a cushion. Cushion is way up towards my favorite cut in any gem, but in small stones it is not too distinct from a round (at least to me) to be worth the trouble. Among the squarish branded cuts, probably Lucere looks the most distinctive to me. 'Cushion' is a generic name for a couple of cuts...some branded. Do you have a certain type in mind?

I prefer the cushion. Less popular, more timeless.

The princess is a trendy stone, and it may look dated in years to come.

Regent's are an excellent recommendation if you want a look that approximates that of the cushion, coupled with the excellent light return of the round.

Thank you everyone for your opinions. I think I am leaning toward cushion. I hadn't considered the size issue with a cushion. Interesting point, especially since all of the rings i've seen online show large 3 to 5ct stones... I almost never see a smaller cushion. Does everyone agree that to really show off the distinct shape the diamond should be 2ct or more? If not, what is the smallest size you would suggest in this stone?

Also, I didn't know cushion was a general term... I don't know the name of the type I have in mind. When I see it online, it is simply called cushion. I found this ring in an article about cushions, can anyone tell me which type of cushion this is? Also, how would you describe this setting? Is it pave'?

I appreciate any infomation!

Thanks again.

I think the cushions are just beautiful. When I first started looking for a stone I wanted something square but not a princess because it seemed so common and I am not a fan of sharp corners. I started looking in to the cushions but I didn't know that much about them and they seemed more expensive for my budget for the antique ones that I wanted.

I ended up going with a square cut radiant because it had a lot of sparkle and no sharp corners. I really suggest trying to look at them in person before choosing one. I bought my stone online but I went to a number of stores to look in person first. It really helped me define what I wanted.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck. Justine

I heard somewhere that princesses were more prone to being damaged on the corners, especially during the setting process. Does anyone know whether or not that's true?

I prefer cushions to princesses. The lines are less harsh.

The stone in the picture looks more like a OMC (because of the large facets)... but not quite (modern-type, shallow crown and depth)? There is no standard cut for a non-branded cushion, so each has its own looks. There is a lovely one at Diamondsbylauren, with quite an unusual cut, and thsi could be the source for a stone after the old-cuts receipe. There is something called "Cushette" cut which is a branded cushion developed from the princess cut (maybe this is the best compromise between your two innitial choices?).
