Hello everyone,

Im currently looking at buying a D IF Marquise stone and have found three that are available at similar prices but from three different online vendors. From my research on pricescope I know it is very difficult to buy a fancy shape diaomnd off the numbers alone but I will have to pick one to buy and if it turns out to be no good I will have to send it back and work down the list. I've attached the three certificates of the stones im looking at and cant really pick between them. Any input would be welcome, is one more likely to be better than the others?

I know you guys get asked these questions alot but your input and advice would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert but if it were me, I'd choose between the first 2 as they face up larger. Can you get photos?

not enough information on the cut. Need at least an ASET image.

I'm working on it but i'm not holding my breath... im thinking this is all I will have to go on. :(

This is not enough information for us to go on. We're as blind as you are without any photos or Aset.

The third marquise has a different shape from the first two (different ratios). Which ratio does your intended prefer? Here's something that can help you visualize the different ratios: http://www.gemappraisers.com/shapePickerNew.asp

Plus, are you planning to set it North-South (pointing towards finger tip) or East-West (perpendicular to finger tips)? If E-W, you want to make sure it's not too large for your lady's finger.

Thanks for the input its good to know that at least I came up with the same conclusion as you guys. Ive asked for photos and ASETs so I will let you know if they turn up. If not I will just have to pick one and see...there arent many 0.9 D IFs about so its proving a difficult task to find one.

Iota15: Its the usual North South arrangement, (but in and unusal 4 prong setting), so length shouldnt be a problem.

Bob,
I wanted to ask why a D IF? You can get a lot more stone for your money with a lower color and clarity and to the naked eye, not really see a difference. If you go to jamesallen.com and search for ideal marquis stones, you can see some photos and the certs, and then ask for the ASET's. What is your budget?

A 1.3 D IF is $13K
A 1.2 V VS2 is only $6,640.

James Allen has 16 Marquise diamonds between 0.93-1.50 carat, 400-999,000, D,E,F,G,H color, IF,VVS1,VVS2,VS1,VS2 clarity, Ideal cut.

Try good old gold as well : http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamondR...2&ctMin=.7&ctMax=2.0&resultsColumns=268435471

Now I am not a marquis expert by any means so someone else will have to help with proportions and bow ties, but you have more options than blind searching! :))

Hi Anne,

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm waiting to hear back from goodoldgold but unfotunalty James Allen dont have a stone that meets what im looking for...

D: because I would like to get the clearest "whitest" stone possible

IF: I know first hand that I cant tell the difference between an IF and a VS1, its purely symbolic, plus I dont need/require a bigger stone.

Well it sounds like you're on the right track! I know from here the folks at GOG are very helpful - I am sure they can help.

Good Luck! :))

Then I wouldnt limit myself to a D/IF. I would much rather have a gorgeous G/VS (that I can see pictures of) then a D/IF
of questionable beauty since you cant see them. There are probably 10+ ugly marquises for every nice marquise. If you
were talking round stones it would be a different story but you just got to have pictures of fancy cuts or be able to see them
in person.

Is it really worth going through the process of ordering stones and sending them back until you hit on the right one? This could
take a long time and could be costly. If you want to stick with D/IF I would call GOG and work with someone that can
bring you in 3 D/IF stones to compare (and take pictures of). They also do videos of their stones so you get a better feel
how they act in real life and under different lighting conditions. That would be the way I would go if I needed a specific stone.
It really seems like you are putting "specs" over the beauty of a stone. Most girls that I know would rather
have a beautiful stone with lower specs then a D/IF that isnt as nice. Sermon over 8)

this. it doesn't make sense to keep ordering all of the D/IF marquises...without photos you have NO idea. I would contact a vendor like GOG who can call some in for you. I am not sure if or how much they charge for this but it is definitely less than calling in/appraisal x however many it takes to find the one. Also nothing wrong with wanting a D/IF, if that's what you want then get it :)

Ask one of the vendors to bring in all of the stones you are interested in - GOG, WF, etc. It doesn't have to be listed on their website for the vendors to have access to them. They may find you a few others as well. Just send them the GIA certs, they should be able to look it up, find it and bring it, if it's part of the virtual inventory.

The shipping costs back and forth eat into your budget. Have a vendor bring them in, videotape and photograph them. Decide which ones you like best, and bring those marquise into your home.
