I started my hunt for a right hand ring gemstone thinking I wanted a spess garnet...........but when I received one I had chosen, I decided the orange wasn''t for me. So, I turned my thinking to either a red stone, or a green (red is my fav color, green emerald is my birthstone).

I also wanted an emerald cut, something around 8mmx10mm. I found and recieved the two stones below and really like them both.........a rhodalite garnet that is pretty purple/red raspberry in color, and a green congo tourmaline which is pretty close to green emerald color.

Which would you keep? I''m torn between the 2 and wish I could keep both!

Here''s the rhodalite garnet....for some reason I couldn''t attach both to the last post. Clem

I''d keep the green, but that''s just me. I LOVE that color!

just another comment.......the congo tourmaline is a modified emerald cut due to the way the rough turned out. The garnet is a true emerald cut.....either one will work for what I have in mind for the ring.

I love the tourmaline, but I''m partial to green stones because they match my green eyes.

The tourmaline!

The Rhodolite, but then again I''m biased. Where did you get yours? I recently bought one of the same size.

the Rhodalite is from artcutgems.com and the tourmaline is from customgemstones.com. The tourmaline was cut specifically for me.

Here is the photo from the cutter after he finished:

I was admiring that tourmaline on Dan''s site

He cut one for me, too, and I love it.

Then we have twins. What kind of setting do you have in mind for the Rhodolite?

i have to say the green.

I think it also depends on what colour metal you you are thinking of to set the stone in. At least it would to me!

For example, I LOVE love love green stones set in rich yellow gold, and my own rhodolite is set in platinum.

Both of your stones look gorgeous! I wouldn''t be able to choose.

The green, no contest for me.

Does the Rhodolite look pretty dark or is that just the photo?

Just curious - have you considered a red spess garnet? After I got my own garnet I went searching online for spesses and was surprised to find other red spessaertite garnets available.
If you MUST choose one of the two stones you posted, I recommend the green definitely! I love green tourmalines.

Yes, the rhodalite is fairly dark, especially in the sun. The tourmaline is really sparkly, surprisingly enough! I did check into the possibility of a red spess, but they are really hard to find, and also much more expensive than either of these two stones.....this is my first gemstone purchase, so I wanted to keep the cost down.

I am going to get bids to have the tourmaline set in white gold, something like the attached photo....I don''t wear any gold at all, but I think the silver looks ok. I don''t know if I want to do diamonds right next to the stone or not (any ideas?) but I am planning to use this ring for inspriation. I want something fairly delicate as I wear a 4.5 size ring on my right hand.

I think the rhodalite is going to go back home today. THanks for all of your opinions.....if anyone has any ideas on delicate settings similar to this one, let me know!

Gosh, that stone in a setting like that would be gorgeous! We need to find out who makes settings like that!

I agree with diamondseeker. As I was reading the post I was leaning towards the green, not sure why except maybe I love emeralds, but I was wondering what type of setting you were considering. VERY nice!!!

I posted the question earlier about this setting and who might know where to get it, and Belle responded saying that it''s Ellen''s beautiful inheritance.

I hope Ellen doesn''t mind if I use it for inspiration!
