I’m deciding between two modern round brilliant stones. I’m not looking for a super ideal stone just an excellent performer as this will be a second ring for me:

stone 1 specs:
Weight: 2.5ct
Color: F
Clarity: VS2
Measurements: 8.80x8.84x5.30mm
Table: 59%
Crown Height: 32.8
Pavilion Depth: 41
Total Depth: 60.1%

Stone 2 specs:
Weight: 2.61
Color: G
Clarity: SI1(eye clean)
Measurements: 8.70x8.77x5.54mm
Table: 56%
Crown Height: 33.5
Pavilion Depth: 41.5
Total Depth: 63.3%

Looking forward to your thoughts!

stone 1, the cutting of stone 2 seems too deep

The first stone is all about getting the biggest spread you can with that large table, shallow depth, and shallow crown. If this is a 2nd ring and you are just looking for a really big look - and the stone is pretty to your eye - then this will accomplish that purpose.

The second stone will be more "balanced" by comparison - but keep this in context. Everyone here will tell you that the 63.3 is too deep. You said you are not looking for a super ideal and if everything else works it is not a total no-no. My smaller diamond is 63% depth (but different in the other proportions than the one you are looking at), and it is just slightly off in performance from my super ideal larger diamond and my super ideal studs... you really have to look for it and, quite honestly, it may just be because I "know" it isn't as "good" as the super ideals that I can see it. I get compliments all the time and that ring is always the prettiest in the room and I see people gazing at it. So the depth doesn't tell the whole story, there are a lot of other elements to this.

Have you run the numbers on these through the HCA?

Thank you for your knowledge! The HCA on 2.5ct is 1.1 and the 2.61ct is 4.5! I bought the 2.61 but in some lighting it looks a bit hazy and dark. However, the rest of the time it sparkles nicely. I’m thinking of exchanging as the dark/hazy appearance in some light bothers me.

Well, there you go... you answered your own question! If the 2.61 is bothering you some of the time, it isn't going to get any better! And the 4.5 HCA seems to prove what you are experiencing. If you can swap out for the 2.5 that would be great. Will look forward to hearing how that stone works for you.

I’m waiting for that stone to come in and see what it looks like. However, it is of course more $$$$. Ugh!

as the phrase goes: you get what you pay for lol! Honestly, though, there are no "deals" when it comes to diamonds.

Tell me about it!

Do you think stone 1 would be considered a 60/60 stone?

Yes, quite there. Stone 1 is a better choice in terms of performance. I like better preforming stones
