My nephew bought an ER from WF. He proposed over Thanksgiving, as planned. Now it needs to be sized down 1/2 size, but WF isn’t taking in repairs until after the new year - totally get that; they must be slammed over the holidays.
However, if he gets the (plain shank solitaire) ring sized on his own, they’re telling him he voids the warranty. I wish they’d wave that; am I being unreasonable?
What would any of you advise?

That’s frustrating but personally I wouldn’t want to lose warranty cover. Is there any way his fiancée could wear the ring on a chain around her neck or on one of her larger fingers until after Christmas?

Totally agree. I wouldn't want to void anything by having another bench work on it

Ditto @elizat...I have those and they are a little bit of a pain to take the ring off/put it on but they do work. This should easily get
her through the holidays until the new year. Congrats to your nephew and future niece!

I would be wary of sizing a ring down in the winter anyway since my hands shrink substantially during the cooler months. The temporary silicone sizer is a smart choice.

Ditto. Plus how will it fit with a band in warm weather? It may not need sized. May be ok even stacked with a band now.

This! I use these in the winter when my fingers shrink

Exciting!

I'd wait it out until the new year and ask them to add sizing beads.

Congratulations on your nephew's engagement! I think that the advice given by the previous posters is solid. Your nephew wouldn't want to do anything that would void the precious (in my opinion) WF guarantee. Furthermore, if it's only half a size difference we are talking about, his fiancee should definitely wait until summer, in order to assess whether she should have the ring sized down.
My cousin sized down her ER by one size and in the summer she had a very difficult time putting it on and off (of course we do live in a country where the weather is very hot during the summer).
The ring size adjuster is a perfect solution for the time being in my opinion. Better not to rush on something that is so radical, just for 1/2 a size difference.
Huge congrats again!

Yes! You're a genius! I used that on my rings. So easy and cheap and NOT permanent.
