My grandfather and I were talking today and he mentioned a star garnet he has. Never got brave enough to cut it himself and doesn't know who to go to.

I want to find the right person to do this for him as I know he would enjoy seeing it well cut.IMG_20180411_195716.jpg

Being in the trade I cant recommend anyone. Sorry

Karl, just reply to this post and post who you would recommend if you could post a recommendation.
Then I'll post the name so it isn't you recommending her/him.

But ... nobody gets to look at your response except MEEEE!

Easy peasy. :saint:

You could contact Doug Menadue from Bespoke Gems. He is located in Australia.

Always worth an email to Jerry Newman of Gemart Services.

What a nice thing to do for your grandfather and I hope you find someone skilled to cut this garnet. I have to say I see a furry little photobomber in the bottom right and he/she is so precious...awww.:kiss2:

@Karl_K
@Wink

Do either of you know anyone?

For transparent sparklies, I know several who could do amazing work. However for the star garnet I do not know anyone. I thank you for asking though.

You might ask your grandfather if he remembers where he got the star garnet. Perhaps the person he bought it from knows someone good.

If there is a local rock shop near you, chances are they know someone who is good with cabs.

His mom and dad were also into rocks. They found it in Idaho (near or in a river, if i remember correctly) and it passed on to him when his father died many years ago. Most of his collection is stuff he or his father collected from fields or rivers.

I'll have to look into local options too. He has other smaller stones that we will have the person cut first to ensure they can manage the stars.

Apparently I have many generations of sparkly lovers in my family!

TP How about posting this query in the Colored Stone section of PS...there are very knowledgeable PSers there and they just might have a recommendation for you.

My little girl is always close. She has been with me since a little ball of fur. I never will understand how anyone could want to abandon her (or any animal).

Yes I completely agree. And to go one step further this is one time I really do not ever want to understand why people can do such horrible things. I think that one falls into the category that evil does exist in this world. Period.

HI, TP

What a sweetly thoughtful thing to do for your grandfather. I'd contact Stewart's Gem Shop in Boise, Idaho

because they are intimately acquainted with star garnets (which, my 'net research suggests, are tricky to figure out so as to yield the stars -- if the stone is not an outright dud with no notable 4 or 6-ray star). Dudley Stewart, the father of the current proprietor, is the man who "discovered" Idaho star garnets back in the 1950's & worked to have them named as Idaho's "state gem."

And at least as of 2011, Stewart's was happy to tumble-cut "outside" star garnets, i.e., ones they did not source :

Very interesting information! I know it is a special skill. Idaho would be wonderful as it is close enough that I could go meet in person rather than shipping. My grandfather is very old school and in person would definitely make him happier!

While driving to work I remembered that Gene Stewart of Stewart's Gem Shop is in Boise, and now I see that MollyMalone has already shared that excellent information with you. Gene has many star garnets in the store and would be an excellent person to talk with.
