Being in the trade I cant recommend anyone. Sorry
For transparent sparklies, I know several who could do amazing work. However for the star garnet I do not know anyone. I thank you for asking though.
You might ask your grandfather if he remembers where he got the star garnet. Perhaps the person he bought it from knows someone good.
If there is a local rock shop near you, chances are they know someone who is good with cabs.
Wink
His mom and dad were also into rocks. They found it in Idaho (near or in a river, if i remember correctly) and it passed on to him when his father died many years ago. Most of his collection is stuff he or his father collected from fields or rivers.
I'll have to look into local options too. He has other smaller stones that we will have the person cut first to ensure they can manage the stars.
Apparently I have many generations of sparkly lovers in my family!
What a nice thing to do for your grandfather and I hope you find someone skilled to cut this garnet. I have to say I see a furry little photobomber in the bottom right and he/she is so precious...awww.
My little girl is always close. She has been with me since a little ball of fur. I never will understand how anyone could want to abandon her (or any animal).
HI, TP
What a sweetly thoughtful thing to do for your grandfather. I'd contact Stewart's Gem Shop in Boise, Idaho

because they are intimately acquainted with star garnets (which, my 'net research suggests, are tricky to figure out so as to yield the stars -- if the stone is not an outright dud with no notable 4 or 6-ray star). Dudley Stewart, the father of the current proprietor, is the man who "discovered" Idaho star garnets back in the 1950's & worked to have them named as Idaho's "state gem."

And at least as of 2011, Stewart's was happy to tumble-cut "outside" star garnets, i.e., ones they did not source :

I noticed the fur baby before the stone! My little girl is always close. She has been with me since a little ball of fur. I never will understand how anyone could want to abandon her (or any animal).
