We practice Ashtanga for 4 years now, how are you stretching?

O! And that''s the Russian one

I do but still mostly Hatha yoga, my second year of college I was an instructor. I miss that sometimes. I start every morning with Sun Salutation and then go through my favorite poses.

I adore Ashtanga yoga. I started last January and I feel so much healthy and calmer and generally better about myself. It''s amazing. I tried for years to find a physical activity that suited me and tried a lot of sports, but nothing worked for me. I''m very glad to have found yoga, it''s perfect for me.

No, that''s not me... Apparently it looks like me, but it''s not me. I wish...

youch that makes me hurt just looking at the picture!
Its another one of those it might be fun to try someday things after I lose some weight.

I love Bikram Yoga--the HOT yoga!

My schedule''s too unpredictable for a real class right now, so I use a video - Yoga Weight Loss Workout for Dummies. Easy to follow, if you''ve done a single yoga class before, you can follow this workout, and she speeds it up a bit, moving through the asanas quickly to get your heart rate moving. Not like Bikram though, which I did once and LOVED!!

I''d love to try Bikram! I''ve been practicing Hatha yoga for a couple of years now. It has improved my flexibility quite a bit, but the main improvement has been mental. I really think yoga helped me finish grad school without going bananas

The pic of that guy doing chair Yoga while his spiritual advisor prays is the funniest thing I've seen since the last funniest thing I saw.

And he is more relaxed than the pro, and isn't it a goal?

ok...both of those pictures are scary! The second is a little tipsy, no?

I too practice Ashtanga. Just started this year, but I love it. Someone else was saying much better they feel about themselves, and I totally concur with that. I can be really upset about something before class, and aftewards I am completely calm. I love that about yoga. My hope next year is to try Bikram. I have friends that practice Bikram and they are always raving about it.

That second pic is great!

I love the idea of yoga and want to do it, but everytime I take a class I end up getting the opposite reaction than I''m supposed to... I must be a freak. I usually end up frustrated and tense. I''m sure part of the reason is because I am new to it and never continue a regular class schedule past 2 weeks because it is such torture to me . I''ve also been told that it can release emotions in me that are pent up.

Maybe you gurus could give me advice on how to go about starting again and being more successful this time. I would really like to experience the good feelings that are associated with it.

:)

It''s simple - find the right teacher.

I tried yoga a few times. I am SO not flexible and I can''t relax my mind and it''s just not happening. I end up just daydreaming about other things and looking all stiff and ending unsatisfied.

I like the idea of Bikram because then your muscles seem like they''d be very pliable due to the heat, but I heard it''s really bad for your heart long-term to be stressed out in so much heat...something about leading to heart attacks or similar? Definitely not wanting to try that.

My kickboxing really tightens up my mucles, I have to do stretching every day and sometimes still I get really tense or pinched muscles in between workouts..we need a hot tub or something!! I take alot of baths but that doesn''t always help.

Does yoga help take someone who''s not super flexible like me and over time make it better? Or do you kind of have to be there to begin with?

There are 8 arms of yoga and diffrent types work well for diffrent things. Hatha yoga is great for streaching but it is not exercise. I have painfully tight muscles and hatha yoga helps me greatly. It is very slow and simple. I cannot remember the title of the book I have at home for beginners, but it is wonderful. I always do things by breathes rather then time.
You seems like a very fit person from what you have posted on the daily workout threads. I think you could be great at yoga if you were intreasted.

Used to practice Vinyasa and Ashtanga (3+) years, but suffered a knee injury...trying to break back in slowly with Sun salutes, triangle seems to exacerbate the knee. I really miss it any suggestions esp poses to avoid or recommended to strengthen the knees?

Absolutely! That's what great about it - you can start with whatever ability you have and will see improvements every month.

You will surprise yourself with progress every week and in a year you will feel younger then before because of the things achievable to your body.

Good instructor is a key.

cymbrie, talk to your doctor or better yet to a sport specialist about it.

Knee is not something to sneeze at.
