Who to trust to resize a branded ring?

Yesterday I managed to cram my newest addition on my finger, I really wanted to see if a half carat would work on my big hands.

Surprisingly it works for me, problem is the ring is a size 6 and I need at least an 8 but I absolutely can’t lose the hallmarks inside the band as it would affect the value of the ring. I’ve emailed David Klass because I trust he could preserve the hallmarks but haven’t heard back (I assume he is very busy).

I’ve worked with David before and I know I can get an insured label from him which I need. Anyone else to consider for this?

Have you considered going to a dealer who sells the branded rings? They may be willing to send it to the company that made the ring.

Wink

Definitely reach out directly to the house. They’ll be happy to advise!

Most brands will consider authenticity forfeit as soon as someone else touches one of their pieces, even if hallmarks are left intact.

@Wink and @yssie, the issue is the jeweler is based out of London (Garrard) and I’m in the states. I’m not comfortable sending this international, I would worry about it getting lost or stolen.

However considering what Yssie wrote about authenticity, I may need to consider other options….is finger liposuction a thing? Having larger fingers is really a hardship with jewelry!

‘Value’, as in what would be required to replace the item new in the case of a loss, would not be diminished by resizing it and it would not affect the authenticity (for this purpose). Value of terms of resale, depending on how good or bad a job they do, might be, but resale is rarely the heart of the question. This is true no matter who does the work. Sizing isn’t usually that difficult but there is definitely a skill here. Skip the liposuction and get the ring sized by a competent goldsmith to what works for you. It may void your warranty if you have one, but otherwise, I would just proceed. The jeweler should be aware of hallmark issues but it never hurts to remind them and to make sure a note to this effect is part of the job ticket.

I was curious so I contacted Garrard via their chat function. They can handle servicing without requiring that you ship!

I will disagree a bit with denverappraiser here - I would really really recommend not having anyone else work on the ring. Even if they do a picture perfect job the piece is no longer authentic by the house’s description - which means you won’t be able to resell it as an authentic Garrard piece, or even describe it as authentic, all the paperwork it came with is voided, and you won’t be able to have Garrard service it for any other reasons in future. And I suspect it would impact an insurance claim as well ;(

All this said with the understanding that ultimately you may not have a choice, some houses are being persnickety beyond reason about requiring proof of original purchase, but... I would definitely personally try all avenues with Garrard (phone calls, emails, etc.) before resorting to having a third party do the work.

@yssie, thank you so much, wow well that sounds like amazing service. I really appreciate you going to this extra effort!

I know it's not ideal, but can you wear it as a pinkie ring?
I don't know if I would mess with the sizing, unless you are really sure of keeping it.
I like pinky rings lately, and wear them all the time.

Nooooo pinky rings! Remember that rose cut diamond I was wearing on my pinky and lost in the restaurant bathroom? I was lucky to get it back! I’m not going to do anything right away but wanted to know what the options are.

Haha, yes I remember!! What a heartstopper that was!

Good to know about the sizing and bravo to @yssie for that research! You rock @yssie and are such an asset here.

Ok, that said, I’d plop that beauty on a super long chain so I can pick her up and gaze into her and enjoy as I make my decision about keeping or not! :)

Thanks @Slick1, yssie really is a wonderful asset to the PS community.

I will be keeping this ring and it will be on my finger at some point. It’s too special to pass along to someone else.
