Well, I had some unpleasant excitement this morning. I was doing some tidying in the bedroom, and putting the jewelry I wore yesterday away in my jewelry box. 20240117_210803-EDIT.jpg

The drawers are like sliding trays, and I must have tugged with a little too much enthusiasm, because the tray with all my necklaces and pendants went flying! I squealed, the cats when flying out of the room, and I froze where I was, not wanting to step on anything.

Ok, took a breath. Picked up the tray, and it's intact. No damage. That's good! Then I started picking up the more delicate pieces, checking everything to make sure there's no damage. Emerald pendant - check! Cameo - check! Antique coral pendant - check! (Huge exhale with that one.)

Hey, wait a second. Since when do I have a loose pear diamond? I know I have a lot of loosies, but they all live together in a box, in their GIA sleeves. So what's this??
Ummmm.....

Looks like the stone popped right out of the setting. :oops2: No apparent damage to the stone, thank goodness. I don't really understand how this happened, but now I realize I have a couple of decisions to make.

1. Do I take it over to GIA and have it graded while it's loose? I think probably yes. This pendant was the first "real" piece of jewelry I ever bought. I got it from I Do Now I Don't, back before it became a huge scam. The seller included an appraisal (from 2002) that called it a 0.98ct F SI2 with moderately strong fluorescence. So I think, to satisfy my curiosity, I need to have it graded. Hopefully GIA doesn't call it an I1, but I wouldn't really care if they did. It's ridiculously white and wonderfully sparkly, so the grade wouldn't dim my enthusiasm for it.

2. Do I get it a new dress? Folks, I'm a lazy bling fan. I've never done a custom project before (as evidenced by the aforementioned cache of loose diamonds). I don't love the rabbit ear basket setting, but it's functional, and lets a lot of light into the stone. Do I just have my jeweler pop it back in and call it a day, or do I add this to my laundry list of projects?

What to do, what to do. In the meantime, I'm down a trusty diamond pendant, so I'm hoping nothing "accidentally" ends up in my shopping cart.

Makes sense to have it graded when it is loose; however, why the added expense if you do not intend to sell it?

DK :))

Curiosity, more than anything.

That's good enough.

If the stone is mine, I would reset it in a new setting with a halo, for the pear to be able to swing and tremble.

I love to have a trembling round stone set in the middle of a heart, like these ones that I have seen in a video:

Your stone is speaking to you…. She’s saying…

Seriously mom, can we go shopping already and all the cool kids have a culet, when am I gonna get one of those?!?
<insert girly teen whine here>

I would LOVE an old cut pear!!

Oh my, look at that organization!!! What system is that?
Do you keep everything in your bedroom? I make my H do runs at the safe lol. He's not a happy camper.

Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have shared that? I tell myself our building is secure. I'm sure I'll regret my complacency some day.

@RRfromR it's the Stella Ultimate from Pottery Barn.

Definitely get it graded cause I agree with you, I like having lab reports for my diamonds.

Maybe this is a good time to dip your toe into custom. I like those Colette settings that are going around for pendants. Oomph the size a little. Custom is pretty easy if you can just point out something on a jeweler’s website and say “make it like that.” It’s when you start trying to design something they haven’t done before that it becomes hard.

Very nice! No, I bet it's safe. I'm in the suburbs in a single family home, so it's different.
I'd love one of the fancy safes that look like furniture but they are sooo expensive and hard to install.

Top right - a very wide rolling ring? Tell me about it?

Can I come over and play? I wanna see the red flower cluster and the stone in the belcher! And allllll the loose stones! I'll help you set them. I can't make progress on setting mine, but making decisions for others is so much easier. :lol-2:

What did you decide to do with the loose pear? Yay for the GIA cert! How lucky that it's an over-1.0 stone that you once got at an under-1.0 price, and a better color too!

Pop on by anytime you're in NYC! But you have to promise to bring Maxine!

I decided I'm just going to put the pear back in the basket setting. I don't have it in me right now to decide on anything new.
