So I bought my daughter a little teal sapphire to have set into a pendant as her flower girl gift next year. (She keeps wanting my jewelry.) She is 8, and have already bought a lab pink sapphire last year, a faceted citrine when she was 6, and an amethyst dragonfly necklace when she was 5. She also recieved tiny wee diamond studs from my parents. :roll2:

So, tell me I'm not alone. What age was the youngest person you bought jewelry quality gemstones for? And of course what was it. :)

Birth. In Indian culture it’s the norm to celebrate the birth of a baby with jewellery (often bracelets and anklets) which the infant will wear until pieces no longer fit.

A lovely tradition. What do they do with the outgrown pieces, re-gift, hand down? convert to something wearable as an adult?

Hand down! Or melt for something new. The pieces are almost always 24 or 22k and labour is low-cost so there it’s easier to justify the expense of repurposing than out here in the US :))

Uh, so far myself, when I was still a student I bought my first non-learner stone.
I plan on gifting my nieces one piece each when they are a little older with a more defined taste.

Birth.

Friends had a baby girl and her birthstone is Ruby. I happened to have some Ruby carbs in hand, and selected one as a gift for her along with a customised box for her keepsakes.

Hopefully she will get to choose her own setting when she is older.

DK :))

I was OBSESSED with a jewelry store catalog as a tween. I didn’t have stones but wanted them badly. Emeralds, rubies, aquamarines, sapphires and Opals were my very favorites. I was obsessed with getting my ears pierced when I was ten and all the girls in Atlanta already had theirs done. I did had a gold baby bracelet and a gold heart as a little girl. And a tiny chip of an amethyst set in gold. And a silver spoon ring made from a sterling spoon. My mother’s dog is named Violette so I got her a ring from Etsy in an old Violette spoon last year. She loves it.

You are a sweet mom!

Thanks, I try. I was bitten by the sparkly bug at an early age too, coveting my mom's jewelry. She indulged me a little with jewelry too, so I think it just seems natural for me. If I'm going to buy something might as well spend a little more for something that will last a lifetime hopefully, then buying junk that will have to be constantly replaced.

...Or that might just be my justification. Lol!

In our family everything even remotely nice was kept for good
Nothing got lost but things got outgrown before they were even worn

I was buying jewellery for DD when she was confirmed at 16 weeks as a girl.
I bought her a gold baby bracelet.
Unfortunately she missed out on the “jewel gene” and has no interest in jewellery except earrings.
She does like opals though, she said she won’t wear them but will put them “on display”.

For college-aged kids: nice ring (one each, sapphire in platinum). Custom-made earrings for DD after college (on some thread here). And passed along some inherited gold jewelry from a dear relative.

I don't think we bought them nice anythings much earlier than that. :P2

At birth. Like @yssie 22K or 24K is given. Bracelet, bangle, necklace, etc. The size of the piece will depend on how close the relative is.

Our now 4yo twins, at birth we got them 2 pink diamonds.

The older 2 kids got pinks, too. But were a little older maybe 2 and 4yo. Needless to say, they are away for safe keeping.

I may have amassed a few staple pieces for them, for when they are of age. Hehehe.

Pink sapphire stud earrings for my daughter when she was about 1 year old. From my recollection, they were .25-.30ctw. She is 19 now and prefers to wear costume jewelry. Gave the studs to one of her friends a year or so ago when I was re-homing many items. I could not find a good photo of the sapphires but here she is wearing her diamond studs that were about the same size and in the same settings.IMG_0735.JPG

My daughter has worn jewellery all her life.
Started with a amber teething necklace.
Gold bracelet bought before she was born.
Gold necklace before two.
Gold golf bangle at 4 (still wears it & she is 12 this weekend).
She gets jewellery every birthday, Valentine’s Day, Easter & Christmas….

Niece, 1 day old when I bought her a lovely sleepy warm pink Sapphire pendant. Sent it to her mom, to be given to the kiddo when she's old enough not to eat it or lose it.

You are so right about the "jewel gene". In my family grandad from mom side had it, mom has it and I have it. Other family members don't care for jewellery.

Like @yssie and @chrono I received 14k to 24k gold. Mine in particular were actually based on the amount, so the closer the relatives, the higher the amount of gold you had to give. There is also apparently a bias as well on both sides of my family were the eldest girl born gets the most jewelry, and more expensive pieces and the last born gets the least, or at least that is the tendency I’ve noticed. For instance, as I was the first born on my mother’s side for my generation, on top of the regular amount (this is for my mother side which is richish), I was given an 18k gold necklace with a puffed heart pendent covered in diamonds (which I managed to get one out in my youth. It had to take a trip to my father’s relatives back to their country to get it fixed. So yah, don’t give fine jewelry to babies/extremely young children) and my female cousins received nothing of the sort. On the other hand, being the last born girl on my father’s side, I only received 2 pieces of gold jewelry while the the girl cousins older then me had received more. Also, boys get none, because both sides of the family have a slight gender stereotyping.
