Why are FLY Diamonds smaller for their Carat Weight?

Hi All,

I LOVE Canary Diamonds, love... I actually replaced the Diamond in my Halo Diamond Setting that once housed my original 2.5 OMB, with a Lab yellow Sapphire to see if I enjoyed wearing something like that on the daily. I have learned my tolerance for warm diamonds is limited- I can't go past a J in old cuts, and G/H in Pears, on the other side of the spectrum (FLY/Canary) is chef's kiss, especially next to bright white diamonds- a canary diamond flanked by white diamond sides? Yes, please!

My questions is this, while I am looking for a Pear in the 3 carat space, when I look for a FLY Pear, the dimensions I am after are in the 4 carat range- why is that? Are FLY deeper? I feel dumb here, lol :(. I want to better understand and hoping some of our Colored Diamond enthusiasts and professionals can educate me.

I’m not an expert but while you wait for one to chime in I’ll share my thoughts. Fancy cut diamonds are often cut deep so appear smaller for their carat weight compared to their non fancy counterparts

Thanks for chiming in @missy that is kind of what I was assuming, but also wondered if they are indeed cut deeper, the question is why? I am looking forward to learn why that is

I'm no expert either, but I think they are cut deeper to enhance/intensify the color.

This.

“The deeper the cut, the farther light can travel in it. This can often lead to a richer, more intense color”.

But let’s see what the experts have to say

I was thinking David (@Rockdiamond ) might step in here at some point, and shed some light on this!

They are often cut deeper to enhance color and how intense the color appears.

Hi everyone!
Yes , in general Natural Yellow
Pear shapes are cut differently than colorless- many times resulting in smaller face up.
Most colorless Pears are “Pear Brilliant”
Fancy colored ones are generally “Pear Modified Brilliant”
There’s extra facets on the pavilion allowing more light bounces before the reflection hits your eye. This enhances perceived color. Also adds weight below the girdle. Hence the smaller face up.
Hope this helps!!
