- of the male variety that is!

Just something I've noticed... almost all the gemmologists I know, or whose pics I have seen online have beards.

Is this because they spend (or like to imagine they are spending) all their time in exotic and foreign lands far away without access to razor blades and mirrors?

Thoughts anyone?

A lot of lady gemologists do not have beards, at least not that I know of.

If you are looking at a stone really close and drop it, it catches in the beard instead of hitting the floor. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

When I become a gemologist I plan on growing mine out ;-)

Have you ever seen a beard search at Customs? Enuf said!

I wondered if it might be the smuggling possibilities provided by luxuriant facial hair!

I''m not a pro, but love gems and one of my least favorite "activities" is shaving - so there must be some mysterious force at work here

Not that I''m growing a beard, I just try to avoid shaving whenever possible...

P dear, this is the funniest thread you''ve ever created.

Let''s not forget a beards uncanny ability to contain snacks. A guy gets hungry out there in the field.

Sweet Jesus, I''d never do that (come to think of it, Jesus sported a beard too...

), I''ve never been a fan of genormous beards and I don''t think something like that would look good on me.

Amguy, you always mention eating Kentucky Fried Chicken while handling your gems...A beard could be useful to wipe off your fingers after a nourishing meal!

Yep! Wipe off all that chicken grease before touching your gems. Wouldnt want to smudge them up!!

ETA: Ew @ BBQ and bread crumbs!!! Hubby has a very short beard and he ALWAYS gets BBQ sauce in it. He says its his flavor saver.

No..no crasru..I always be eating Hot wings..not KFC
2.gif
..lol..I love me some hot wings..then i end up sending a stone to someone right after..lol..no matter how hard you wipe your fingers that hot sauce seems to soak into the fingers

I have yet to sprout a beard, no matter how long I spend at the microscope or in the field. Maybe I''m just not working hard enough?

In an effort to diversify their portfolios they all bought stock in the company that makes these. Realizing that their retirements were in jeopardy they resolved to create a market for the product.

I have often wondered the same of UK Premier Division Football (Soccer) referees. They are all bald. Seriously .......

I think that the entire reason for gemologists having beards is because they think that it makes them look more intelligent. Having a beard, glasses and the correct pose helps tremendously in getting the idea across that you KNOW what you''re doing. Wearing a lab coat can help too...it gives a person the "clinical" look. The attached picture shows how a gemologist would typically look on vacation. Notice how the glasses add to the overall look of superior intelligence. Please don''t get the wrong idea...this is NOT me, (I got this off Flick''r somewhere just to illustrate my point).

Bwhahahaha that made me snort! Lookin pretty sharp there!

I especially like the biohazard lenses.
Are gemologists contagious or the contagion themselves?

Perhaps a plague of sapphires is coming?
