Wiggle room in your ring?

BF asked me for my ring size earlier this week! He said that the design he's chosen will make it hard to resize later, so he wants it to be a perfect fit. So, it got me wondering...what do you all consider to be a perfect fit for a ring?

My mom seems to think that a ring should have a little "wiggle room" in it--just in case your hands swell during pregnancy or hot weather. But I'd feel so nervous having a ring that was loose enough to glide right over my knuckle. What if I gesture with my hands too vigorously and the ring goes flying off?

What do you think? Should I tell him my "real" size--that is, the size that I feel comfortable with today? Or should I listen to my mom and go up half a size? If I do, should I get sizing beads for now? Are those comfortable?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

P.S. Since I haven't posted an update in a while, the background is that he's designing a custom ring without my input. He really wants to surprise me. I know he's planning something kind of unusual because he told me that he had to go to 3 separate diamond sourcers for the center stone because no one could find him what he wanted. I'm so curious what he's up to! Anyhow, the fact that he asked for my ring size makes me think that he's had a breakthrough with his mystery diamond hunt and that he may be ready to go into production soon. Exciting!

I would reccommed a little wiggle room, like your mom said you want to know it will fit though hot weather and pregnancy, or even just a bad day with your period. I know im about a 8.5, 8.75, but we are getting a 9

I am a size 6.5, and told him that. I have size 7 rings that always spin and I don’t mind the look of a solitare that spins but my e-ring will be a halo and I don’t want it to spin :P

I will get an eternity ring for my wedding ring in a 7 so will just wear that when I swell up like a balloon ;)

It's hard to say. I think it depends on the metal being used. I used to think I wore a size 6. I have a palladium ring that's sized 6.25 and it stays on my finger pretty well, even though it's too big. I assume that a ring made out of white gold would do the same. My engagement ring is made of platinum, which is heavier, and even a 6 was too big. I had to size it down to 5.75, and it still slides around a little.

With all that being said, if it's white gold or palladium, I would think you can size up without too much worry. If it's platinum, I'd stick to the size you think you are. Either way, it's good to always be aware of your ring when your hands are wet. Mine fits pretty good, and I still worry sometimes that it'll slide off.

Unfortunately you can't get a size that fits perfectly all of the time, it will feel looser in cold weather and tighter in hot weather. I wouldn't get it too big unless you like the feeling of having some 'wiggle room' It really depends, some people like their rings tighter and others prefer them looser.

i'm a 4.75 but i got a 5.

it is too loose and spins when worn alone, but fits much better with a wedding band. can't wear like that till i'm married though! ;))

Something to consider if it is hard to size is your weight.

Unfortunately I'm getting to see that if you put on 10 pounds some of that weight goes to your fingers so now my e-ring is snug. :nono:
I'm also having the thought that I'm glad we got something that can be sized because when those 10 pounds (plus some extra) go away my e-ring could be a bit too loose.

If you get it too large, the diamond will spin to the side. Depends on how much that bothers you versus the chances you will gain weight or swell for some reason.

We went to have my finger sized after work, the day after having Mexican food for dinner...which always makes my fingers swell up. Some days my ring is almost too loose because I could shake it off if I try hard enough. Usually it fits just a little loose and I've only had to take it off once or twice. I got the Euroshank (flat bottom) and that cuts down on the spinning. :))

Well...swelling is a legitimate issue with ring size. Personally mine is a 6.25 but a size 6 is ideal. I originally had a 7! In the winter time it was really loose, but honestly, I was VERY conscious of it, and always made sure I could feel it.

I would try maybe a quarter size more, instead of a whole half size. Although...if you do decide on half size, wearing other rings..wedding ring etc...will help snug it up a little.

Also...a suggestion would be...if you would like to have it your true size, maybe you could get your wedding band a little bigger, and if you do "swell" just wear that? I don't know if you plan to wear the wedding band below it or above, but if it's below and a little bigger...it won't fall off.

I wouldn't recommend going more than a quarter size up from your actual size. I wear a 4.75, but a 5 will also fit without being too big. Anything higher than 5, though, would be way too loose.

I wouldn't get bigger at all. My old ring was 6.25 platinum because a jeweler said the same thing about hot weather etc. The spinning was annoying. I even lost it in bed one night. I freaked out thinking I lost it somewhere and it slid right off my hand while I was sleeping, I found it in the sheets when I got home. When I went to Tiffany's recently I got sized and the woman told me a size 6 would be better which I agree with. Keep in mind since I had the old ring I've gained 15+ pounds and my fingers haven't gained any. Every person is different. I would suggest you go to a jeweler and try on the metal sizers and see what feels comfy and what the jeweler recommend. Most of the pregnant women I know end up having to take their rings off at some point in the pregnancy due to swelling so I wouldn't be surprised if I had to do that.

Thanks so much for all of your perspectives on this. It really helps to hear how about what factors you all considered and what tricks you employ like the slighter larger wedding band--very clever! I agree that you can't really expect a ring to fit perfectly all the time--especially during something unique and temporary like a pregnancy. The rings I wear today range between 5 and 5.5, and now that I think about it, the 5.5 ones already spin when I wear them, so it's probably smart not to go any larger than that. I'll pop into a jewelers this weekend and try on the metal sizers just to be sure, but I'm thinking the 5.5 may already be "wiggly" enough.

get sized for sure. I thought I was a 6- FI got me a 6 and find out im a 5. Apparently I never knew how rings should fit. Luckily my ring could be sized and I have had the five through spring (comfortable perfect fit) to summer (slightly tigher- one or two days of tight out of the whole summer) and now up til now with some 35 degree days (a lot looser- but not loose enough to fall off). I am getting my Wband in a 5,5 (only comes in half sizes to order) and will wear it a few random days around the house in winter- spring and very beginning of summer to make sure I feel good about the size. I think since I get married in July I will wait until after the honeymoon to size it smaller if need be since the tightest the set will ever be is in summer, so I really need to live with it for a summer first.

as for pregnancy- well maybe I need a "pregnant" ring :naughty: ... but really if I leave the wband a 5.5 I hope that will siffuce for 90% of the pregnancy time..

I prefer to have my rings sized to fit - I hate loose rings and I'm always worrying over them.

It also depends on how your knuckles are shaped. If you have bigger knuckles, you can get a ring that fits looser because the knuckle will keep it on. If you have tapered fingers, like mine, the knuckle isn't any help so you probably don't want something that is loose and spinning because it'll likely come off.

eta: I also don't like the ring sizers because I think it's too easy to get sucked in by what the jeweler says ("Oh, this is the perfect size for you!" then a few days of wearing your ring and you realize it's all wrong). I would go by whatever rings you currently wear that fit the way you'd like your ering to fit (make sure the band is a similar width, because wider rings will fit tighter). Then take them into a jeweler and have them size the rings just to make sure the sizes are accurate.

Congratulations on this big step :)

My suggestion would be to find out the estimated width of your future ering and possibly your wedding band (what width you like) and put the two together. In general, you tend to have to go up a half size (sometimes one size) for really wide bands. My ering is a 4.5, when I wore it alone, it spun a little when it's cold, when I added my wedding band, it was a better fit, when I received my eternity band, I had to to up to a 5 for the three together (combined width of about 6.5mm).

Best of luck with your decision! :))
