Will a cushion-shaped stone fit into a setting for a round?

Hi,
I am looking at an estate setting. It has tab-style prongs and is set with a round CZ. I'd like to remove the round and replace it with a cushion-shaped stone. The cushion is 7 mm x 7 mm and the round in the setting is 7 mm. Will this work?

Thanks!

ETA: My local jeweler says yes, but he's been wrong before when I've asked him about antique pieces.

What are the dimensions of the cushion from corner to corner? That's the important measurement, from what I have learned.

Thanks, Freke, I didn't even consider that measurement :errrr:
Using a tape-measure at home, and going over the top of the stone, I am getting @ 8 mm. But with the crown of the stone in the way, that may not be accurate. But I'll have my jeweler measure it with his calipers.

If you have a 7mm round and then a cushion that is, say, 7mm long by 5mm wide (and it can't be 7mm all over otherwise it would be a square), you can see from the drawing below that if you take the round out of the setting and put in a cushion, you'll have gaps at the side that the round would have covered. So it's important to look at your setting and see if you are happy with what will show to the sides of the stone. Also, the placement of the prongs is critical because if they are currently at 10, 2, 4 and 8 o'clock, you can see that they won't be in the right places. The other important dimension is the depth. Your cushion could fit lower or higher and might look odd for the setting.

Your jeweller will probably have to do some work to get it to fit and it may look ok but it's not a typical change to make.

Thanks, LD. It's not oblong, so I guess it's not a cushion. It's a square with rounded corners, so it has a softer shape than a princess cut. The bottom of the setting is deep enough to accommodate this stone. What I'm concerned about is any "overhang" of the square stone in the round opening at the sides. The prongs are in the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions. So this square stone will appear kite-set, is my guess.

So it's an emerald cut I think. If it's square with angled corners (like an asscher) then it's an emerald cut. For emerald cuts, you really need the prongs to be in the right places. If the corner edges are quite angled you may need a setting that protects them.

Here's a very poor representation of an emerald cut, next to a princess.

Yes, is is a square emerald with slightly angled corners. I do not think this vintage setting will work. I think the stone will look like it was set crooked or off-center. Thanks everyone for saving me from a possible ebay no-returns nightmare! :wavey:

Or a square cushion cut...
