In looking at a stone with a 8.4mm length and I foun this setting. The seller seems just like a random lady, and she doesn't seem to know much about jewelry. She can't give me what size would fit in the stone, she have me some measurements though I'm not sure how accurate they are. I also got this picture.

Here's the pic

Maybe somebody has better vision than I do, but I couldn't tell anything from that photo -- maybe it's 8 mm long but whether it will fit a specific stone looks like anybody's guess. I assume there are other photos, right? If the price is right & you love it, you could have the head re-done if necessary.

No, can't really tell anything from that pic. You don't have any other pics that might offer clues?

Sorry the picture is hard to get right sense it's not part of the listing. The price is very right but wouldn't be if I had to redo the head. From my eyes it seems like the very bottom might be 8mm. So maybe? It has a return I might just have to take a chance.

Is your stone a pear? We can't tell anything without knowing the stone's dimensions too?

Niel - is this seller unwilling or unable to take other pictures? It just seems like its ridiculously difficult for you - or anyone else for that matter - to buy the setting when the seller isn't sure how to measure it, and can't photograph it well. But maybe this is one where you have to use "The Force" to buy it, and go by your gut feeling!

Haha yes it's a pear. I'm content with the width so I'm not worried about that. Like I said the length of the pear is 8.4

The length looks like it might fit, but how deep is this pear? Is it a native cut? Some of my native cut gems have bulgier bellies, so they don't work in diamond settings even though the L x W worked out.

Yes honestly it's annoying. It's clearly just a random lady with an eBay account. But she is quick with her responses, provided me that additional photo when I asked, the setting is cheap, well made from my understanding, and already sized to the right size. The width of the stone is good it's only the length I'm concerned over.

I she said it was 9.5 but she was basing it of the very top of the prongs, I'm wondering if set lower it would work, to my eyes the bar in the basket seems to measure 8mm?

Oh I dunno.

FK it isn't very deep at all.

Your tolerance is so much greater than mine, Niel. I would be running from that seller and not looking back.

Pears are harder than, say, rounds or rectangles because they can have so much variation in proportions. If she has a good return policy -- I have doubts if she's a random lady w/an eBay acct -- give it a try. Otherwise, especially with a pear, I have to agree with Minou. I do want to know how it works out if you do buy it!

Oh ill let you guys know regardless. :wavey:

Pears are a difficult shape to shop for 2nd hand settings; unless custom fit, you are likely to have uneven gaps. Even if you know the LxW, there are fat and skinny pears.

yes thats true, but I'm comfortable enough with the shape of the stone vs setting that I'm not overly concerned about that. I know its a risk, though.

Ugh this lady.

So it was scheduled to end today at 545 ish. Right at my break at work so I was like "awesome". No one had bid anything so it was a platinum baguette setting for 200, right size and everything

Then she took it down and relished it. Said she "had the weight wrong" and was relisting it. Still an auction sense she getting "lots of interest" which I doubt sense there was no bid.

I give up

Guess she felt the price was too low for her. Sorry Niel.
