This is not my stone. I post the video because I want to learn about the cut. Is this a window or tilted window? Will you recut the stone in this situation? Why does the dealer prefer to display the colour stone in east west position? Thank you.

Extremely small window with some tilt window. Stones balance better on its longer side, hence you see more East West display.

I have read somewhere that precision cut gems tend to have tilt windows. Is this true?

It depends on the angles the lapidary chooses to use. In general, it is dependent on the gem material and angles (design) and how much weight vs beauty is preserved. Non precision cut stones tend towards windows. That said, I’ve also seen poor quality precision cut stones with windows.

Tilt window is to be expected in almost all gems. It’s a matter of the degree.

OK. Thanks. So, a tilt window is to some degree unavoidable and not a flaw, while a 'window-window' is always a flaw. Is a seller obliged to disclose a window? Am I hijacking this thread and should open a new window-thread. I find this window issue one of the most opaque, excuse the bad choice of words, topics in colored gems. Worth a new thread?

I think it's worth a new thread - I'd love to learn more about it. There are a few pre-existing threads on the subject, but I'm always interested in new discussion.

I'd like to learn more about it too. Some books say windows can lighten dark rough. Others say they can be used for aesthetic purposes. I've even read that some jewelers prefer small(ish) windows to reflect light from the metal underneath.

If anyone has a brilliant cut stone with alternating facets above/below the critical angle I'd love to see a pic.

Just because a window lightens up a dark gem doesn’t mean one should consider it seriously. A windowed gem also sacrifices sparkle so it’ll appear “dead” (not lively). Best to just get a better cut lighter toned gem in the first place.
