Hi all... So last night i was rolling around in bed when i had an idea about how to further incorporate wine into my wedding.. (because it is my number 2 love, behind my FI). I really need some feed back because it may be a terrible idea born from insomnia.

What if instead of table numbers i had table wines. On a place card would be the printed wine label and guest would sit at the corresponding table. At the table would be the bottle of wine (maybe a sign?) and glasses.. wine tasting in sues. I would keep it to easy to read wines, and on potential sign write a description of the wine and note encouraging tasting of their wine and neighboring tables...

is this awful...

(i should say that I''m going through classes at the International Wine Guild to get a certificate, and I''d like a way to show my/our love for the grape. Besides this we are having a beer/wine reception and martini bar.)

Thoughts very much appreciated.

hi sugarjo, i think that''s a great idea, FI and i are getting married at a winery and thought of naming out tables after types of wines, but most of our guests don''t speak english very well, so i would hate for them to have trouble finding their chardonnay or sangiovese table

if this isn''t the case for you, i say go for it! it''ll give the wedding a nice personal touch

I absolutely considered naming our tables after wines, but decided against it because we don''t have anything else "wine themed" except for choosing our wines carefully. I think people at my wedding just wouldn''t see the connection. But I think it would make more sense in your case because of the classes you''re taking, so your guests would get the connection.

How many guests are you having? As a guest, it can be hard to find your table without numbers if there are a ton of tables, but with a small group I think this would work really well.

And I have to ask, what wines are you having at your reception? I decided no Charddonay, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, or Cabernet at mine because I feel like those choices are at every wedding and event. I wanted to mix it up a bit, though I didn''t want to spend too much money. I bet your wedding will have fantastic wines!

If you do "table names" instead of "table numbers", rather than just put a bottle of each type of wine, I would definitely print signs. Reason being, is if its hard for guests to read or they have to pick up the bottle of wine to see what it is, its going to slow down the seating process. Its hard enough ushering guests into dinner from the cocktail hour as is, but if it takes that much longer for guests to find their seats, it will delay the whole evening.

Some suggestions:

1) rather than print table wine names, do table numbers on sickers fized onto bottles of wines. So rather than your typical framed table number, it will be a bottle with 1 on it, a bottle with 2 on it, etc

2) Ask a winemaker to creare a signature wine for you. Serve it with your dinner, during a special toast, or give a bottle to each guest as a favor.

3) Have your welcome bags (if doing a room block) include mini bottles of wine. maybe some cheese/crackers, etc

4) Serve your personal favorites of food & wine combos: caviar & champagne, port & cheese, foie gras and sauternes or have your caterer come up with wine pairings for everything being served that evening. So the best wine to order with the "fish" option, the best for the "beef" entree, one for dessert, etc

5) Instead of doing a tradtional cocktail hour, do a "tasting hour". Along with the passed hot d''oeuvres have small tastings of wines passed with each item.

6) Use cork stoppers as your escort cards

7) Use fresh grapes in your centerpeices

Thats it for now, I''ll keep ''em coming, stop me when you''ve had enough. I''m a wedding planner, it just comes out lol

Sounds like a great idea to me, and a good way to get guests at the same table talking to each other if they''re doing tastings together!

wow, nakedfinger, you really do sound like a wedding planner

chargergrrl, i really love your wedding stuff, i''m getting married at a winery as well, but i haven''t put as much thought into those details, maybe i should

sugarjo, i think i misunderstood earlier, i think it would be better to have the wines spelled out instead of having people rely on reading the bottles, that would take awhile for people to get

wow NakedFinger... you are amazing!!!!!

in addition to "wine table numbers" we are featuring a wine with all courses/ pairing/ suggestions typed on menus. and also using mostly Colorado wine.. (don''t be fooled, we have some pretty amazing stuff out here)..

and I love, love love, all of your suggestions... writing them all down to talk to with FI and my mom... great ideas, thank you so much!!!!!

Chargergirl...
i heart your wedding...
and don''t be surprised if i "borrow" your table number/wine bottle thingies....
those are awesome!!!!

I love the idea!

We are having breweries that we have visited as our table names. We aren''t going to have a beer-themed wedding or anything of the sort, but our thought was that it is an "us" themed wedding and brewing/craft brew is a huge part of FI''s life. I see the same thing about you using wines. It is a huge part of your life and, to me, that is enough reason to include it. If you want to include other wine elements, that will be "you" too.

One word of caution. If you are having, say, 8 people per table an extra bottle might not be a huge risk. But, I went to a wedding of one of FI''s cousins that had an 8 course meal with a wine pairing with each course as well as aperitifs. Another cousin''s date who was sitting at our table literally passed out around course 6 because she wasn''t a drinker. Love the idea, though!

I love this- if I were into wine more, I''d totally do it. Very very classy. Too bad FI doesn''t drink wine....

I just thought of another wine related idea that a friend of mine used. Their favors were little wine charms, that you put on the stem of your glass. Each guest got 4 charms and all of the charms were related to things the couple were interested in. I think they had some cooking utensil, a camera, a paw (for their dog), and one more I can''t remember. I thought it was really cute! Something personal, but still useful.

Here are some fun ideas:

Incorporate the grape theme into the invitations

Name the tables famous wine regions

Provence
Loire Valley
Sonoma
Napa Valley
Tuscany
Rone (with the little hat over the O

)

Here''s the list--I''m thinking you can pick the names better than I can

Make the placecard holders out of used corks

We had these at a wedding last summer and thought they were so cool we kept them! Some companies sell these out of resin, but the real ones add a bit more flair I think. You need half a cork per label--better get drinking!
