Last Monday while talking with a client I heard a lot of commotion in the hall and people talking about a flood. I looked out the window and sure enough my building was an island.

There was a burst water main at the head of the triangle my building is on and there was a LOT of water surrounding my building.

I decided to go for it and made a "First Decent" of Main St in Boise Idaho and am still the only kayaker in the world to do so. Film at eleven. Well, actually the film was at ten in Idaho, but I made two stations and have well over 100 clients call me or stop me in the street to share a laugh with me.

The building had over ten inches of water in the basement but fortunately was between tenants down there so no major damage was done to anyones business, but the building will need a complete rebuild in the basement as the water ruined all of the walls as well as the carpets.

After my 80 seconds of fame the broadcaster said, "Well, I learned one thing from that. Always take your kayak to work."

Pretty good advice as far as I am concerned...

and as always, a little course correction, poor technique using a back stroke like this, but hey, when you are about to run aground you do what you must...

Heh, I love it Wink!

I've only been kayaking once, on a lake in NH, but I really enjoyed it. I've been seeing a lot of kayakers lately on the Black River here, in NJ. (about 5 miles from my house).

Is it just me or does that gal in the first picture with the video camera look like she has one pant leg on and one bare leg?

Congrats Wink.

It's not you, I noticed that too - I was wondering what happened

My guess is she rolled up her pants legs so they wouldn't get wet, and one went plop anyway. Doesn't that always happen when you're knee deep in a puddle??

Great story - looks like it was good fun

Hmmm...WInk I wonder how many stations you would have made if your office where smack dab in the middle of NYC...?

News at 11--Man in Kyack on 42nd Street, moves faster than cabs...

Hysterical! Thanks for the post!!

She started out with both legs up, but did not bother once it fell and got wet to lift it up again. That is her news station in the back ground...

Yes, our policemen in Boise tend to be a friendly lot, they are usually underworked as far as serious crime goes. We get one murder every few years and a few rapes, but it is a wonderful city and great fishing and kayaking are only a few minutes to a couple of hours away, depending on what you are looking for. There is even some great kayaking and fishing right here in down town Boise.

I am hot and tired, just got back from a weekend at the Owyhee Reservoir camping and fishing with my lovely wife. Wonderful way to spend a weekend!

My favorite (and only) Boise story is once when returning by a van from a river rafting trip to Boise airport, my bag flew off the top of the van. We couldn't find it, so I had to get on the plane and return bagless. Needless to say, I had a phone message at home from someone who had found it. I arranged to have the lady send it to me, only to find freshly washed and folded clothes upon it's return. (We had been rafting and camping to 7 days.....) How nice is that!

Yep, that is pretty typical western hospitality. Lot of good folks out here!

whoops....that was supposed to have text with it. Winks post made this native Boisean smile and remember one of her stories....

Last year while visiting family we decided to raft the Payette River. Class 3 and 4 rapids the entire way as the water was so high! So exciting! On the way back to base camp our bus started smoking. Being about 20 yards from the parking lot we all just go off and went around back to take off our suits. When we emerged not 5 minutes later, this is what we saw!

This is what was left.

Sounds like you were on the South Fork of the Payette, one of my favorite runs.

Yikes, good thing you were not on that bus when it decided it was tired!

Wink

last one. We could have used that broken water main that day!

Yep...it was the South Fork. Looking forward to our next visit back to Boise to do it again.

So next time you come please call me and we will all have lunch together.

Wink

Nice! Any excuse to play in the water, heh Wink? Our type of guy

Man, that van fire looks scary! When they go, it looks like they GO!

Wink - I'll be sure to do that. After lunch can we come play with your rocks again?

Sure, and maybe this time I won't be running out the door to catch a plane...

Excuse? You need excuses? Dang, I just thought it must be time to kayak. No electricity, no computer. No computer no PS, therefor, IT"S KAYAK TIME!

Wink

Wow, that's so cool you live in Boise - born and raised baby!

LOL @ Wink!

Did you also make the front page of the newspaper? !

What happened, a water line break? And you *just happened* to have your kayak at work that day? Hmmm.
Up_to_something.gif

Very nice to see you, btw.

Unfortunately the paper did not get photo's, they would have had to travel five or six blocks to get here...

I just happen to have my kayak with me a lot, it fits nicely in the bed of my pickem up truck, along with the paddle. I keep the helmet etc in the back seat, mostly so it wont blow out when on the freeway, there is not a lot of theft in these parts, cowboys and other pickem up truck drivers tend to be quick on the retaliation when it comes to that. Idaho is a great place to live, nice folks, little crime and great recreational opportunities.
