Hi,

I found this ring on eBay, and I was wondering if it is really worth what they are asking or is it the just designer name prestige? Have you ever bought something like this? Do you see value in pieces like this? $500,000 new seems a lot and I’m trying to understand more about it.

I found some 5 carat diamonds on James Allen for the same price

You ask whether it's worth it.
I'm afraid that question is broken.

A fancy brand name is worth every penny to some folks.
It's worth nothing to me.

People vary.

Some people are happy to pay extra for a “name” or for a design or style. Think those older Cartier pieces - certainly unique, rare and valuable and in my opinion worth the premium. That ring might be a Harry Winston but it looks just like any other ring setting. So why pay a premium for something no one will recognize or appreciate unless you take it off and show them the inscription inside?

.

According to Pricescope listincs, the price corersponds to a comparable 5 carat E / VS1. A couple of merely 4.3-ish E /VS1 come at somewhat less than 180K ... Inasmuch, either the Winston name or the symbolic crossing of the 5 carat threshold are worth cca. 100K premium.

The ring is certainly the most classically prim object in the universe !

Haggle, please ...

.

Btw. ... perhaps this is the sort of round diamond that would be held in higher regard around here: WWW - it has been offered for sale, but I do not know what the status is. Yes, E is a higher grade.

Cut numbers aren’t perfect, I’m sure you could do better with your $$$$

Given that the center stone is 4.02 carats, E, VS1, and you can get a 5 carat diamond of similar color and clarity (not to mention pick a beautifully cut diamond as well) from JA, it doesn't feel like much value for me.

However, the concept of value is subjective. Only you can decide if the trade off (HW name, 4 carat diamond) , or a 5 carat unbranded diamond is worth it to you.

Buy Phoenix's 5 carat diamond ask Victor Canera to make a setting of your choice and hey presto better than HW at half the price.....

Those JA stones you list at the beginning are just a distraction. If you want to use JA for comps, look at 4.0x/E.VS1/xxx/faint. There’s plenty of them out there and it's worth noting that this is a 4 carater, not a 5. Similarly, nearly any jeweler out there will be thrilled to make that ring for a center diamond like that for a few thousand dollars upsell. Frankly, that’s an easy buy at a $100,000 ‘discount’ if you're ok with a knockoff.

The crux of the matter is the HW branding. He’s charging a premium for the HW brand and defending it by pointing out that Harry charges even more. JA, and others like them, don't have it at all. That’s a quintessential question in the secondary jewelry market and it boils down to what YOU consider valuable. Some count brand as pretty important and others don’t give a whit. Given the way you asked your question, that doesn’t seem to be what you’re fishing for.

Someone will buy it for the name, so yes, it is probably worth that much.

I'd wish to hear their argument ...

The current premium makes me smile, KWIM. Anyone considering picking their 5 carat E/VS on the WWW, would likely smile too - perhaps feeling free to take 4.5 cts for 5, since Harry did it. Only relative to HW prices this is tempting, perhaps, & I cannot imagine the Must Have HW buyer, erring this way.

Certainly not the kind of piece that proves anything about HW, lest damning with faint praise. It does say something about the eBay joint holding the listing - perhaps the very point of the remarcably optimistic asking price: it is saying that the seller thinks this is a holding, and it is ...

Digressing ...

I'd want a better picture of the makers mark. The photo provided does not clearly show the distinctive font used by HW which has little balls at the top of the H and W.

Depth and pavilion angle numbers are out for me. Like kenny said, brand name means a lot to some people. For others it isn’t worth it.

And to that I add, unless you run with a pretty high social class of people, most of your circle wouldn’t even know what Harry Winston is/means. Most people I talk to don’t even know Neil Lane, or wgat a yogo sapphire is.
