Worth resetting this ruby?

Thought I’d come pick the brains of the CS experts!

My father gave me my grandmother’s ruby ring after her passing, but since then I have never worn it since it’s in a really horrific 80s setting (I’m sure this is a familiar story...). I am toying with resetting it since it has such sentimental value to me, but I also want to be practical and not spend a load of money on a stone that isn’t worth it, if that makes sense.

I know it’s difficult if not impossible to give a definitive judgment based on photos alone, but thought I would ask to see if you all thought it might even be worth pursuing. Thanks in advance!

I would unset it, send to AGL for certification (if you are curious about the stone itself) and then reset.

It’s always worth resetting a sentimental piece. There’s a fair bit of gold there so scrap value can go towards the new ring.
I see a lovely “east west” setting with perhaps a few of the diamonds added into the band.
Then you’ll have a fabulous ring to wear.

I'm not crazy about that hue, tone and saturation for a ruby.

What to do with it?
If I had only 1 or 2 colored stones I wanted to wear and the sentimental value trumped (sorry) the color, it would be worth reseting.
If I had lots of colored stones with better color all already set in rings that I wore, it would not be worth reseting.

Personally, I'm not crazy about marquise stones that are set East West.
They look too much like an eye staring back at me. :errrr:

I've set stones that many here wouldn't think were "worth it"
HA!
If it's sentimental, you think it's a pretty stone, and you'd wear it
Why not?
Setting can be economical or a load of money.

I think if you don’t like the setting, maybe you could turn it into a pendant. Maybe use the diamonds to make a halo.

Thanks, all.

I am a bit curious about the stone so I will probably send it to AGL for a brief as recommended by @whitewave . Any idea on what their current turnaround time is?

The only other colored stone I wear is my FY OEC engagement ring, so it might be worth resetting after all. It's been sitting in the jewelry box for nearly 10 years, might as well get some wear out of it. It is quite sentimental since my grandmother wore it everyday. I have been window shopping nicer rubies for a while - something to commemorate my two July babies- but I think one that scratches all my itches might be a fair way off.

Agreed with Kenny, I have yet too see an e/w marquise that I really loved...though I could be convinced- I'd just need to do a bit more digging and see more examples.

My initial thought was an antique styled halo on a plain shank, something like this...

If it's lead glass filled, I'd say no, even for sentimental reasons, because it can get damaged upon setting. If you want to reset it for sentimental reasons, go for it. It may fit in a calibrated gold setting which is less expensive than a custom piece.
