Hi all,
Would you please give me your thoughts on this emerald. I am attaching the AIG report and a photo, although the quality is poor. It is selling for $1500. I feel fairly knowledgeable about diamonds, but colored stones are out of my league (I just think they are pretty!). Thanks so much for!!

Have you seen it in person and is the color on the monitor accurate to what you see in person?

Need more photos in many lighting situations, especially for emeralds. Can you get more? Also, if buying online, you definitely want a video!

Based on the language of the report, though, you could get a much nicer emerald ring for that price. Smaller and better quality is always better than bigger of lesser quality. Emeralds can be stunning but based on the photo, it doesn't seem stunning. Emeralds should be enchanting with a wonderful luster. That emerald looks flat...

That's a very fair price for the 18k diamond setting, so the emerald must be very poor since it is sizable. I don't know if it's worth it just to get an emerald.

The stone is not good in quality. I personally stay away from stones filled with resin. Also, the price is not a steal.

I think if you wore that, and someone who doesn’t know about CS saw it, they’d be impressed as it’s big. Personally though, I think the emerald isn’t of great quality and I’d stay away from stones that have been filled with resin.

Personally, I'd pass due to the mention of resin and spend my money getting a better quality emerald (albeit smaller). Is it the size you love? What do you love about it?

I have no issues with resin, depending on the type used and how heavily treated it is. The fact that it’s treated yet translucent isn’t good. Resin is usually permanent and stable. Oil isn’t. My guess is that the setting is probably worth more than the emerald.

Paperumbrella,

I am not familiar with the AIG lab, but level of treatment is a very important grading criterion, and all the important labs use a similar scale: None, Insignificant (not used by all labs), Minor, Faint to Moderate, Moderate to Strong, Strong to Prominent and Prominent. Without treatment level a grading report is of very limited value. Without such a grading scale it is impossible to know the underlying clarity. Words like "indications" don't tell us much. Two visibly flawless identical gems, for example, can vary enormously in price depending upon treatment level. The price difference between one graded NONE and one graded MINOR is likely to be 100%
