The treatment is dying as specified on the lab memo, so basically it's probably a big piece of dyed carved rock, and not worth much. You can buy huge opaque dyed beryl and corundum, and other minerals for very little. Some unscrupulous sellers charge a lot for it.

Re: Would like to know if I bought wisely and if it was wort

WHat I object to most is the Lab calling this "Natural Emerald" and noting the "dyeing in the fissures". Mother Nature doesn't dye anything! At best you have a hunk of green beryl, with a dye job, not natural and definitely not emerald.

I am not against treatments, but I am totally against misrepresentation.

Well, I'm upset that I let myself get "scammed" but now looking at it, I should have noticed also that it said treatment- oil on his page and on the card says- dying in fissures. Will stop dealing with this business from now on.

how much did u invest for this piece of emerald ??

Re: Would like to know if I bought wisely and if it was wort

Also, note the crack that is across one of the corners and down the side. That looks like it could easily break off.

Re: Would like to know if I bought wisely and if it was wort

This is a very old thread, I wonder what the outcome of this purchase was. I'm always very disheartened to hear about such unscrupulous sellers taking advantage of people who have no idea of what they're really buying.

Re: Would like to know if I bought wisely and if it was wort

Everything they needed to know about the piece was right in those pictures. I dont think its a case of an unscrupulous seller any more than a case of an buyer who didnt do a bit of research and thinking before they bought. The carving is crude, the thing is cracked. Not to mention the comment of dye on the report card, and the sellers mention of color enhanced/oil. Unless there's something I'm not seeing... I dont see how anyone was mislead into this purchase.

No, they probably weren't BUT this is an excellent example of somebody not knowing anything (or very little) about gemstones and then wanting to buy as an "investment". Hearing the word "Emerald" and then seeing the size was probably enough to tempt somebody who didn't know as much as the average person on PS. It's a real shame and I hope the OP didn't spend too much money and managed to get a refund.

A reputable gemological lab would not call that an emerald, so the lab and/or the seller was unscrupulous.

Grail Knight: ....."beware: the big dyed green rock cannot pass beyond the Great Seal, for that is the boundry, and the price, of immortality."

Grail Knight: "He chose poorly."

Well, it doesn't say how much he spent. Obviously, the stone is not usable in jewelry, but if the op wanted an exotic looking paper weight and didn't spend too much, peace be with him. But I've seen similar work (huge opaque carved "emerald") on Ebay, highly priced some time ago. It was not something I'd consider investing in myself.

Look at this monstrosity, by the way:

Finest green!

Very useful if you have an intruder, to bash him over the head with...

There was a recent thread on an auction that was to be held with "the world's largest emerald" which was some green monstrosity that looked like a boulder. It was denoted as an emerald by some gemologist, which was shocking, but it was dyed green rock, perhaps had a little beryl in it, but who knows for sure. The seller wanted a million dollars, but was eventually arrested on fraud charges, and the auction never took place. Turns out that he bought it from ebay for around $10K if I remember correctly ,which to me, is still way too much money. I personally would have rather had a nice piece of malachite, which is, as far as I know, natural in color, and a nice green opaque stone.

The refractive index listed on the above gem report makes me shake my head. :nono:
