I dropped off my new setting and loose diamond at the jewelers on Nov. 4th. I needed my diamond set, a new head added, and it sized up a bit. I was given the date 11/21 as the date it would be ready. Oddly, its a Sunday and the jewelers is closed that day. When I commented on that, the person helping me said that they just give dates 2 weeks out in case things get crazy busy, but they were currently taking about one week to get items completed.

I called yesterday to see if maybe my ring is done and the women I spoke to said that my head was on, diamond was set, and it just needed to be sized and polished. Great! I was so excited as I'm going through bling withdrawal :cheeky: I called today in the late afternoon to see if it was completed, spoke to the same woman I did yeseterday. She said that she was sorry but my ring wouldn't be ready until Saturday at the earliest. I pointed out that it just needed sizing at this point, correct? She said yes the head was on, the diamond was set but that they've shelved my sizing until the weekend. Is that normal?

I wonder if they have different people to do different jobs on the jewellery repairs. Like one does the setting, another the sizing.

It would annoy me that its almost done and has been put aside though!

That doesn't seem to make any sense to me. Why would they not just do all the work at once?

That's what I'm confused and annoyed about! Half the job is done, why not finish the other half so I can come pay for it and pick it up? Are suddenly swamped with jobs that they can't finish mine?

I'd be annoyed if it was past the date they originally quoted me. Otherwise, it wouldn't bother me.

agree with haven here - the making of my ring was about two months after the quoted date. I wished i had it, but even that didn't bother me too much....

It's not the due date that bothers me (although it does seem long for the job that it is), I want the diamond set and sized correctly and if that takes two weeks, so be it. It's that half of the ring is done and has been set aside that irks me.

I suppose I give people the benefit of the doubt, because in your situation I would just assume that I wasn't the only customer they had, and that they weren't setting the job aside and doing NOTHING in the meantime. They're probably taking care of other customers in the meantime. It must be their process of doing things, to complete the work one aspect at a time.

I'm not the type to micromanage things and want them done a certain way if I'm paying a specialist to do them, though, so maybe that accounts for the difference in our reactions--you are annoyed and I would not be annoyed. It doesn't matter to me *how* or in what order someone takes care of a job, just that it is done correctly, and in the time promised.
