What I am worried about is the " discoid fracture surrounding a rectangular, cottony included crystal" This looks like a white spot seen from the crown, along the pavillion. Suppose to be from the result of heat treatment.

It is .92 ct. 6.0 X 5.1 X 3.2mm Oval cut

I am thinking that when mounted it could be hidden?
Is it just something that is not disireable in a Ruby?
Does it take alot away from the value?

Thanks,
Brian

Can you post a picture or a link?

Sorry, the picture is gone but did show the white area on the pavillion. She just thought it was normal. I noticed it when it arrived.

Sorry for the edit but she did have a old hardcopy of the gem and it does show the white mark

Still 10 day return if necessary.

Would be quite a task for the experts to make any comments if there is no pics.
Would be good if you can take a pic to show.

My layman guess, a claw strategically place cover the flaw, but will it compromise artistically?

Cheers!

Would love to help.. but I think we would have to see the pictures first. When it comes to gemstones... the numbers count.. but not really.. you cannot just look at the numbers and know if it is a really good stone.. as you could tell if it was too deep etc.. in a diamond... and color distribution is really important.. etc..

I was hoping an expert would weigh in with an explanation of what a "discoid fracture" is....

I''d wonder if such a flaw would impact the stability/durability of the stone.

My 2.0 Mega Pixel camera just isn''t cutting it... Other than the white spot, it is a pretty stone and I should be able to cover that. So, I am just going to keep it and get it set.

Anyway, thanks for trying to help without a pic.

If all you can see is a white spot... this doesn't appear to be of consequence at all. As much as I can tell, if thatthing oes not show much and is no risk for the integrity of the stone, there is no kind of trouble left for you to worry about.

Taking pictures of gem inclusions is not easy. AIGS has some wonderful ones up on their website (HERE), including some of heated sapphire inclusions (left). A few more come with the "Inclusions" chapter of Richard Hughes' Ruby - Sapphire book (right).

Just for fun...

It just depends if the fracture reaches the surface. Since you indicated that it is close to the girdle(?), a surface reaching fracture might cause problems in setting. You are correct that discoid fractures appear around a crystal inside the host material after heat treatment. Discoid fractures are flat, planar, usually oval or round "halos" that occur when the inclusion expands enough with heat treatment to fracture the surrounding crystal.
