Would you do it?

Should I upgrade by trading in?

Hi,
I have a dilemma, and am wondering your opinion. I have a 1.56 F SI 2 and a circular brilliant that is 2.24 O-P VVS2. I was thinking of trading them in to have one diamond in a plain classic setting. If I traded them in to my jeweler, I will be able to get a 2.0 J SI 2. Do you think this is worth it?

Are they all circular brilliants? 1.56, 2.24 and 2.0?

Do you wear the O-P often now?

Yes, daily, but I’m not wearing the F SI 2 as a result. I’m wearing the O-P everyday as it’s comfortable and easy to wear, especially in the summer. So sadly the F sits in my box. I have two other nice sapphire right hand rings so to put it as a RHR would be superfluous

From what you've said, I would not. A smaller diamond with SI2 clarity would not even be a good trade-in deal for the larger diamond alone, imo. For me, SI2 is too low on clarity anyway so I would avoid it.

Also, you haven't mentioned the quality of the cuts on any of the diamonds or what type of certificates they have.

Personally, I decided to keep my older diamonds to be made into other pieces of jewelry (RHR, necklace, bracelet or half of a pair of diamond studs) or for a future e-ring for a close family member, if it's wanted at that time. What I estimated I could get for them was just too little for my liking.

But I think to know for sure what you are dealing with, you will need to first be sure the certificates are reliable (GIA or similar). Then research the retail cost of similar diamonds online, for all three. Of course you wouldn't be selling at retail but at least it will give you a solid comparison of the dollar amounts involved. Good luck. :)

Your O-P is beautiful! If you are wearing it and enjoying it every day, why trade it in?

Your 3-stone with the F-SI2 is also very pretty -- maybe you'll start wearing it again in winter? Otherwise, consider re-sizing it (if need be) for a RHR so sometimes when you're out and about you can wear your O-P on one hand and the F-SI2 on the other?

That does not seem worth it to me at all. It seems to me your jeweler would make out far, far better than you would in such a deal. It feels like he'd be getting the 1.56 for free, essentially.

Everyone’s comments have been super helpful so far and what my gut has been telling me. I have always been a bit sensitive about the yellow color of the O-P, but am crazy about the wild sparkles and high clarity. Likewise, I like the high F color but do not like the low clarity. I was kind of thinking to upgrade to get one that is more balanced in color and clarity but I am hesitant to get a J and and SI 2. It doesn’t seem worth it to me and just needed some reassurance. It’s tricky because I wouldn’t want to invest another 20 grand into a stone. I just would rather spend my money on other things, so I was thinking to put the two together, but guess it’s not a good deal after all.

sorry im having trouble seeing on my phone
are both potential trade ins on white or yellow gold?

Hi! I wear platinum as I am sensitive to white gold and like the heaviness of the platinum too. I wouldn’t trade the settings in though.

oh false hope sorry
see on my phone the setting looked yellow gold and i was thinking a white metal would help the stone look whiter as you are colour sensitive

I think it’s worth mentioning that one of the cuts you are talking about trading is a circular brilliant, they are very desirable especially in a larger size. If you really wanted a MRB in a 2 carat size, I would save up or trade other things but I wouldn’t get rid of that circular brilliant unless you’re really unhappy with it.

If that ends up being the case, definitely look at comps before selling it so you don’t short yourself.

what the jeweler is offering doesn't really sound like an upgrade for you, although it sounds like it would be for him. A 2 ct. J SI2 sounds like a bad compromise between what you have now. At least now, you have one high color and one high clarity. With the J SI2 you really get neither. I definitely wouldn't do it. It's a bad deal for you and a good deal for him. Have you looked at comps for what you could buy a J SI2 for? And then what you would have to pay for your two stones? And we haven't even touched on the cut of the stone he is offering and that is probably a whole separate discussion.

The 2 ct and 1.5 are priced priced in the middle of what the search showed

this is the closest I could find looking quickly. I can't get a link to take me to the stone, but here are the stats and price. There's a video if you look for the stone.

I'd sell the F SI2 and keep the OP VVS2. It sounds like you don't make use of the F and this bothers you. Don't worry about things like "balance" of specs - low colour is not bad, just a different flavour.

I personally like the idea of having just one major stone/ring but I don't feel like this is a very fair trade or upgrade. I would not do it.

Could you just get a lab stone to scratch the itch for now? Clean Origin has some 2 cts around $1200-$1400 from what I’ve seen. I can’t comment on quality but it seems like a bigger loss for you to trade the 2 in. At least then you’d know if a middle ground stone would make you happier.

Sounds like the O-P is a keeper! You’d regret getting ring of that baby. Have you though of repurposing the F si2 into a pendant or cuff bracelet?

Thanks everyone for your help! I told my jeweler that I do not want to “upgrade” after all. Not sure that it would be a good deal. For now, I will keep the two. I have considered lab diamonds and still not sure how I feel about that for my wedding ring, but it may work at some point. I’m going to just alternate wearing the mrb with sapphires and the O-P for now. If I ever buy another diamond, I’m going to read their upgrade policy closely!!
