Would you send a loved diamond for GIA certification?

My original engagement ring from over 20 years ago was EGL certified. My jeweler has offered to send it to GIA to have it assessed and certified. I am superstitious about even having it out of its setting. Lol. But, for anyone who would inherit it, it seems to make sense to know the GIA specs. Thoughts and advice?

You can get estimates about specs from GIA (basically a report about stone and setting) without removing it from the setting. That's likely what I would do in your shoes.

If you do not plan on reselling it (and I suspect you do not since you expressed it has such a sentimental value), why have it done now? Or at all? You have had it for over 20 years without GIA certificate, so enjoy it. What if you find out that it is not what EGL said it was and it might start bothering you. I would leave it as it is. Plus GIA certification is not cheap.

I wouldn't risk it get lost or damaged. As @daisygrl mentioned, really no value to getting it certified.

I agree with the others who have said not to bother getting a GIA certificate. Just continue to love and enjoy your diamond.

I would just enjoy it. Don’t start guessing it after all this time. The fact it has an EGL report is because it wasn’t going to fair as well as with GIA. I know it’s tempting to know but it may very well open a Pandora’s box.

I won't love it any less if it grades lower than what it is as an EGL. Jeweler sold us the ring more than 20 years ago and will pay for everything (I am a good customer and am about to buy my holy grail diamond - but keeping my original - so he is being very nice lol). The fact that he has offered to take care of everything (insurance, shipping, fee and will reset when it comes back) and this won't cost me anything is why I am even considering it. :). Interested to hear more from all of you (and really appreciate the perspectives so far!).

Since it's no cost to you, then I would probably do it.

Would I spend my own money to get a stone certified? No. However in your case the jeweler is basically doing you a solid, so I don’t see why not - as long as it doesn’t impact your feelings about the ring!

I would be tempted if it’s being paid for by your jeweler and you have nothing to lose. And how exciting you’ve found your HG ring. ❤️❤️❤️

Waiting patiently to see pics and hear more info. :appl:

If your jeweller is handling everything, I’d say why not as long as you’re comfortable. Can’t wait to see your HG.
