I've see many PS folks find all sorts of treasures so I'm hoping that you'll be able to help me find an antique/vintage platinum band that's 2-3mm wide, in good shape. I'd prefer some sort of pattern rather than plain, diamonds are not necessarily a bonus although I'd consider one with a few tiny diamonds scattered about. Inscriptions don't bother me.

If it's 8 or 8.25, I won't have to have it resized, but I'd consider something that has to resized if the price is right (a bargain :) ).

I'd like to keep the price (including resizing, if necessary) below that of a comparable new band, so probably under $500. Bargains are best.

This is probably a needle in a haystack search, but I'm in absolutely no hurry. I'm hoping maybe someone here has one you want to sell or might stumble on one when you're looking for something else. I'm constantly amazed at what some of you find when looking for things for others so I'm hoping the magic will work for me.

I've attached a picture of something that is perfect (other than size). I actually bought it on ebay last week, only to find out that it had sold the night before in the B&M store and the listing hadn't been removed from ebay. I could kick myself for delaying. I was trying to figure out whether it would be better to have the seller resize it or take it to my local jeweler and have him take care of it and I was waiting on his callback. I should have bought it and asked the seller to hold it until I figured out what to do. ;(

Here are a couple of ebay listings that I don't like as well, mainly because I don't find the patterns as appealing. The first is in okay, but it doesn't look like it's in great shape. The second is in good shape but I'm not sure about the pattern. Both would have to be resized.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/150740845495?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

I like these two, but they're white gold. I'm not sure whether they are vintage or just vintage-design.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Ruby,

Thanks for finding all of those! I've seen some of them, but several were new to me.

I like this one best, except for the price. There is a "make an offer" but I'm not quite ready for that yet.

This is probably my second choice: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-PLATINUM-ETERNITY-WEDDING-BAND-/300651943528?pt=US_Wedding_Bands_without_Stones&hash=item4600409668

Your links have given me some new search terms to use. 'ppreciate it!

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Addy,

Thanks for more links. The third one you listed (the second rubylane) is dated one day before the day my dad was born!

Ruby,

Looks like lots of possibilities at the link you just posted. Will have to spend some time looking there because there may be a treasure there.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Cluless,

It's definitely in the ballpark sizewise. I don't know how I missed that one in my searching. I like it (it's definitely one of the better ones) but I don't love it. I am sure I'll be going back and looking at it, though.

Thank you so much for posting that. It also gives me a seller to keep tabs on and I've put it on my watchlist for now.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Sorry it's not the one. I'll keep looking if anything else comes up.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Cluless,

Please don't apologize! I keep going back to it and looking at it. I do like it, it just doesn't grab me. I really, really appreciate your finding it for me. I have searched and searched but had not turned that one up for some reason, so I'm glad you showed it to me.

I'm in no hurry to get something. I posted here because I have seen PSers turn up some incredible finds so I'm hoping that the magic works for me. I'm thinking that this is going to be something that someone just stumbles across since there probably aren't that many in the grand scheme of things.

I picked this one because it has the leaf design you are partial to and is very close to your size.

They have some nice antique/ vintage bands.

Edited to add:Unfortunately the pages do not hold on this site, but you can find it on page 7, last one.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Ruby,

The page number DID hold! That's a very pretty ring, and I looked at the other pages, too. On page 5, there's a gorgeous platinum over YG peacock band. I saw several rings that I liked. Thanks for the link to that site.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

To clarify what I like, it's not so much the leaf pattern in the example ring that I like, it's more the rounded profile (like a carved low dome or half dome) and the milgrain edges, as well as the fact that the pattern is in good shape.

The ring at this link is priced very nicely, especially since it includes some little diamonds. I'm just afraid of the diamonds falling out if the ring is worn 24/7, and I'm not fond of the square edge. I actually like the design on the part of the band without the diamonds better than I like the diamond part: http://www.rubylane.com/item/570452-rl1289/Vintage-Platinum-7-Diamond-Wedding

Here's a beautiful platinum and gold one: http://www.rubylane.com/item/664770-H1014-40/Beautiful-Art-Deco-Platinum-18K

This one on ebay looks like it may sell for a reasonable price and it's kind of neat because it has milgrain edges as well as milgrain detailing on either side of the top. http://www.ebay.com/itm/150740845495?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 Wish I loved it because it will likely be a good price even with resizing.

Addy, I keep going back to this one you posted: http://www.rubylane.com/item/494298-400-00002/Platinum-Art-Deco-Engraved-Wedding... I did contact the selling store and the inventory manager and I exchanged several e-mails. Even though there's a Ruby Lane return policy and the IM agreed to a short approval/return window, I'm leery of the 20% restocking fee. $150+ just to look at something and reject it isn't my idea of a great deal. The ring is in excellent shape and the couple were married the day before my father was born, so I think that's kind of neat.

Anyway, the search continues. I've just started looking and the suggestions you've all given me so far have been very helpful.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Cluless,

Yes, that's the exactly the right shape. I'm hoping to find something that's less worn, but that profile is perfect and I see it's the right size, too.

I know we'll find something eventually!

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Just wanted to point one thing out. Some sellers state it, others do not, but I do not think you can size a band which has a continuous design on it without breaking the design, which will be noticeable. Also they tend to be thin, so I wonder if they can be stretched up without weakening them. Would you consider a reproduction?

But I think I understand what you are looking for. I think they call them comfort fit.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Ruby,

That's a great suggestion! I'll go back and look at what that vendor has to offer. I just took a peek to get an idea what you'd found for me.

I'd like to get vintage if I can get a good deal, but new would be fine, too. I also don't mind if resizing breaks the pattern. It won't be a very large plain section, which can be kept under my finger.

It's looking like a lot of the vintage rings are priced the same as the new one you linked.

ETA: This one is gorgeous: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-HAND-ENGRAVED-PURE-PLATINUM-3MM-WIDE-COMFORT-FIT-LADYS-WEDDING-BAND-RING-/310218463506?pt=US_Wedding_Bands_without_Stones&hash=item483a761912

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Ruby,

I checked out that vendor's web site and the rings are $553 plus $19 shipping, so I'm thinking they'd take $575, give or take, with make an offer (not all designs are available on the web site).

I'm thinking that if I can get a new 3mm band that weighs over 5 g., a vintage band is going to have to be $450 or less, including sizing, and I'm going to have to LOVE it. The vintage ones are3 usually 2-2.4mm and weigh less than 3 g.

I'm going to keep looking for vintage in hopes I'll find a bargain, but if I don't, the new ones you found are gorgeous.

Thanks!

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

You are welcome. I really enjoyed helping. Antique / Vintage bands are a passion of mine, but I also appreciate the beauty of the ornate reproductions. I hope you find exactly what you are looking for.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Ruby,

From what I can see, that one is beautiful. (I'm reading this on a 9" screen while riding down the highway with the sun glaring on the screen so I'm not seeing anything all that well.) It does look more substantial than most of the bands from that era. Just wish it were platinum. I'll look at it again once I get home this evening.

Oh, that's a beauty, too! Too bad I'm not into a collection of these things. Y'all have found some gorgeous bands.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Okay, I know this one isn't anything like what I described, but I keep going back and looking at it. I'm not sure exactly what the appeal is. It's not the right shape, it's not engraved carved, and it has quite a few little diamonds that are not set flush into a rounded, solid band.

And the photos on this site are kind of funky. Everything looks like white mold over yellow gold. But I still like it very much.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Cluless,

That one is very pretty, and such a nice price. I would love to have a wardrobe of pretty rings, but that's not practical or in the budget.

I'm attaching photos of the ring that the band is to go with. My original preference was a low-dome 2.5 or 3mm comfort fit (Blue Nile) but the vintage/antique bands intrigue me and the carved/engraved finish should help camouflage the patina. Kind of crazy mixing a modern setting with an antique, but ....

Whatever I get needs to be relatively narrow (I've worn wider rings and don't really want total width more than about 6mm) and have a low profile (to fit under the prongs without rubbing).

This is a 2.06 J SI2 (but not as tinted as the first photo shows).

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been enjoying looking at all the links.

Re: WTB: antique/vintage platinum band 2-3mm, pref size 8-8.

Ruby,

Thanks for the links to the Ruby Lane vendors. I did contact St. John & Myer about the band you linked that was dated the day before my father's birthday and the inventory manager and I exchanged several e-mails but I ended up not getting that one. It was sold at full asking price and I just didn't love it quite that much.

The inventory manager sent me a photo of another band he'd just gotten that he thought I'd like better, based on my comments to him about what I liked and didn't like and I've decided to get it. It's a smidge wider (at 3mm) than most bands from this period seem to be and it has the milgrain edging and rounded profile that I like. It had the ubiquitous flowers and foliage that are common among many of the bands I've seen, but the design seems a little more elegant than the others I've looked at so far, with the leaves being more irregularly regular. It is dated the Saturday before my father was born, so two days before the other one. How strange is that?

I didn't get the bargain that I was looking for, but I was able to negotiate a price I could live with and the price includes resizing from a 7.75 to an 8.25 (with old stock platinum so it matches the ring) and with the new metal engraved to match the existing design.

I'm guessing that it will take three or four weeks for it to get here, but that's fine. I'm in no hurry.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions. You helped me find different sources and I had a chance to look at quite a few possibilities. I knew the PS crew would come through for me!
