Hello PSers!!

I'd love to buy some starter stones for a friend's kiddo - she's at the picking up pretty rocks and shells stage of gemculcation

Anyone have a few starter stones of different varieties and colours lying around? Budget for the lot is around $200... I guess? Really not looking to spend too much. I'd guess at this point the more colourful and bigger the better!

Lab stones, treated stones, a-okay as long as the treatments are permanent (ie. I want to avoid coatings).

I can't help with the starter stones unfortunately, but just wanted to say that I wish my mum had had friends like you when I was younger - what a fab present plan!

I can’t help either but this makes me so happy
Good on you, yssie:-)

Do you want some really basic jewelery they can be pulled out of? I have stuff in sterling that the settings are worth not much.

I have a good sized smoky quartz in silver, what I think is a big amethyst in a silver setting, etc. It's just sitting.

Has the 4 year old had these before? My in laws own a museum and shop and they start kids with things like these and they identify the different things in them first, then you move to gemstones;

I have some lovely bigger stones that I haven't listed ... I could put together a colorful set of rose quartz, citrine, smoky quartz, prehnite, lapis lazuli, red garnet ... they are clean and well-cut (not precision-cut) ... if you are interested, let me know and I'll take some photos. You are welcome to contact me through one of my LT/DB listings if you prefer.

I have some lab stones that I can sell for cheap. Very cute idea! My LT name is the same and you can contact me there :)

I had these kinds of gem and mineral box sets as a kid, and I loved them!
A much better idea than small faceted loose stones that will get lost.......

Thank you much for your ideas everyone!!

I’m loving those mineral sets - that’s a fantastic thought. I will definitely be picking up one of those!

I think I’d like to try some faceted stones that sparkle/glitter/glimmer/glisten/glow as well, see what “sticks” so to speak... @kgizo, @lovedogs, @marymm thanks for offering to take a look in your stashes, I’ll reach out to you offline ::) @elizat do you think the stones could be unset by me at home? Her parents don’t mind gems but they prefer to keep her away from jewellery.

Bonus points for yellow - apparently the favoured colour at the moment 8)

Are you on LT?

@elizat show us pictures, just in case someone might want to buy the rings?

gee im tempted to buy those for myself :appl:

What a fantastic idea. My 9yo son loves the geode kits and is building up a collection of minerals/ fossils. He is particularly interested in amber.

Hello again all!

@marymm, @kgizo, @lovedogs - I just reached out to you on LT, please let me know if my messages don't come through?

This is such a lovely project, I want to do the same for my little girl when she’s a few years older. Thanks for the idea :)

Anyway - did you get around to buying any stones for it yet? As I came across this page: https://www.litnon.com/index.php?page=view&cat=281&pgnum=1 and remembered this post. There’s a Ceylon sapphire for $15, amongst other bargains!

I have a bunch of cheapie gems I don’t mind parting with but I think are too small for how old she is. Let’s just say I see a lot of kids her age coming into the ED with “foreign body in ear/nose” complaints lol. I myself once fell in love with a particularly shiny marble when I was a kid and decided the perfect hiding place for my treasure was in my right nostril lol.

But if she’s still into this stuff when she’s a little older I’ll be happy to supply some nice faceted garnets and cheapie things.

Ooh. I need to update here!!

I did get a nice handful of beautiful bright coloured gemstones from three lovely PSers ::)

And apparently one of her current woes is having nowhere to display her burgeoning shell collection... So I also picked up some of these darling coasters (some for her, some for me!!):

I got mine with gold plated edges, and I have to say that for the price they’re fabulous!! Bright colours, nice usable size, very well-packaged.

:sun:

 MTG I actually did ask her mom (not that I don’t trust dad, but... ::) ), who said that they’d probably withhold the loose gems for now. She seems to be past the eating phase but you just never quite know!

But the coasters will be fine ::)
