What do you think of this setting idea?
Would you ever set a CS like this?
Could save a lot of $ in metal
:lol-2:

I asked the jeweler and the transparent parts are made of nylon and apparently sturdy enough for daily wear.

Nooooo…

Rock crystal maybe --some of those are cool (but tricky to size :lol-2:).

Nylon? No not so much. Is it from Claire's?

EEK, no! haha. I definitely like the idea of alternate material ideas, but that looks kinda... cheap

I saw this one with rock crystal that's really neat.

This one is REALLY neat and I think it does the alternate material and gem better than the clear one

Hemmerle also uses a lot of unconventional materials - copper, iron, wood, steel... though not transparent

Geesh, I know metal is really expensive these days, and some settings are ridiculously thin, but this is just a big NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I rather get a durable nickel free alloy silver ring if I want to save some $$$.

I don't believe I've ever seen transparent nylon, more likely it's polycarbonate (Lexan). I have some plastic injection molding experience, and almost certainly there will be molded in stresses in this part. Over time the stressed areas will grow weak and eventually fail. IMNSHO only a designer getting very poor technical advice would set an expensive diamond in a plastic setting.

Weren’t bezel set diamond solitaire pendants strung on clear (plastic?) cord the thing to do, for some? Like maybe in late 90’s?

I didn’t do it then, probably won’t now, either.

Definitely a no for me, as I rely on the band to provide good finger coverage!

DK :confused2:

So I keep getting IG videos of young women who are hell-bent on teaching me to wear my clothes all wrong. Shirts as skirts, skirts as dresses, dresses as pants, pants as shirts. Inside out, upside down, you name it, someone’s taken a video of it.

The fact that these videos was my first thought when I saw that opening photo probably tells you everything you might want to know about my opinion :eek-2:

A number of jewellers have made names for themselves using alternatives to precious metals - I actually personally love wood and paper in fine jewellery. But only when those choices feel deliberate and intentional, done for the sake of improving the look and feel of whatever is being made. This nylon thing just feels gimmicky to me.

Nope.

Pretty sure that would yellow or grow opaque over time, and we’re not talking years. Yuck.

Ummm... I mean... if it were some cheap synthetic stones, then why not, if you're after the look... But it would be just a temporary cheap piece that you enjoy for a year and then throw out. Plastic is rubbish. Why would you set a valuable stone in a rubbish setting? It just doesn't make sense.

not my thing, no.

Another No.

I'm having heart palpitations - not because of the "look" but I honestly can't see how that would be safe or sturdy.

I don't think it looks bad but wouldn't the nylon yellow and get brittle over time?
Neat idea if the diamond just floated on your hand.

I'd like it if say, it was on a thin borosilicate glass band with a barely there basket and prongs, but that fishing line does not look good with the metal basket of the diamond and too anxiety inducing with how flimsy it is.
