Yellow gold solitaire next to platinum band?

Hi all,

I got married with a plain platinum band and we are saving for a diamond solitaire "engagement" ring to come at some point over the next few years. I'm considering getting it in yellow gold. Does anyone have a similar combination I could see, to see how they look together? Are there any potential downsides to wearing those metals next to each other? Thanks!

Thank you! That sideways oval setting is so cool!

Long term over years as the rings move the plat will eat away the gold.
How soon that will happen depends on a lot of things.
I know a lot of people that do it and I just tell them to keep an eye out for it.

Silly question along those lines: I have a platinum solitaire and a 14k white gold band with diamonds. I plan on wearing a spacer between the two and anticipate that the spacer will just be a “sacrifice” ring to keep the other two from rubbing direct each other.
Would it be better to have a platinum spacer, white gold, or just go super cheap and get a silver one that’s replaced more frequently (yearly)?
I know that if I really want to avoid them rubbing I should get them soldered, but alas, I am fickle and don’t want to commit to the same band every day.
By the way, thanks for posting so much @Karl_K - you are a wrath of info! ☺️

In your case the white gold might eat the plat. or at least damage it depending on specific alloys.
They would both eat silver and it has the least likely chance of damaging either.
Silver is not a bad idea as long as your body chemistry and environment are ok with it.
There are no silly questions, because which one will be the one damaged is actually complex and not very exact.
Its more like dealing with probabilities.

Thanks Karl! By the way- “wealth” of information was what I meant in my original post  although sometimes when poor quality diamonds are posted you’ve also had to be a wrath of info too (but it’s for their own good!).

I didn't even notice, but now that you pointed it out it cracked me up.
Some people say I'm intimidating on here but I dont see it.

The color combination of white against yellow (or pink for that matter) could be beautiful. One thing to watch out for is the uneven wear on one ring, usually the gold ring against platinum. This will also vary depending on how the gold was alloyed. The more favorable scenario would be if the rings make contact against a large surface area. This way the wear would be more even. If they make contact in a small area, that area can wear away pretty quickly.

Good luck!

Here’s a platinum engagement ring with a 24k gold wedding band, and a thin platinum eternity band. Usually I wear them without the eternity band. The gold is actually rubbing off and discoloring the platinum engagement ring, but I’m sure that would come off easily with a polishing cloth.

This was very helpful - thank you! I really like the rose gold next to the platinum on you.

This looks lovely! I love that rich 24k band - I've never seen a 24k gold ring before, where did you get it?

My wedding band is platinum and 14k yellow gold. It's actually one piece so it eliminates the rubbing issue
This is so unique and interesting, I really like the leaf pattern.

I got the 1.5mm 24k band from AAurous on Etsy.

Such a cool band!

Your wedding band is lovely @Inked ! I love the two-tone and the mix of textures...really pretty!

I adore mixing metals!1.27ct K next to G band in yellow gold.jpg

I always mix up metals. Currently a mix of 18k Yellow and Platinum.

Edited to add: I mix up so often that I do not notice a lot of wear on the yellow versus the platinum. I don't really think about it when I choose rings. You could always do a thin spacer. Something like this twisted band but in 18k and plat. They are very narrow bands.
