Hi there,
I tried to do a search on PS for an answer/opinions on my question but couldn't find it so I thought I would just pose the question. I am setting three small diamonds into a band -- the diamonds are I in color. I usually buy colorless diamonds (ering is E color and my diamond pendant is G) so these diamonds are a little more "yellow". I am going to set it in YG and the jeweler said he can dip the prongs in rhodium so they will be white. My question is -- what about the head (not sure if I am using the right term -- the piece that the diamond is set in) -- should I ask that this also be in WG? Will the YG head make the diamond even warmer? OR the effect is minimal? Or maybe this is dependent on the diamond?
Thanks!

Hi, @Cou_03 .
Based on what I've read here from both prosumers and trade folks, it will be dependent on the light return of the diamonds (diamonds with higher amounts of pavilion leakage will tend to show or "absorb" more of the setting color).
All in all, it comes down to personal preference.
There are a few threads floating around with pictures of colorless diamonds in YG as well as slightly tinted diamonds in WG/PT.

In my opinion. Just as a diamond enthusiast and not an expert setting a slightly tinted diamond ( l color) in white metal makes the diamond appear whiter. Yellow gold I feel like makes it look more yellow. Again this is to my eyes. Based on what I’ve observed

My 5 stone ring has E-F colored diamonds and its original setting was 18K yellow gold bar setting, it bugged me so I finally had the top remade into 14K white gold setting, it made a BIG difference in my eyes as to the color of the diamonds they looked much brighter and whiter in the white gold.

That is what I had read. Thanks

Hmmm… yeah - both my e ring and pendant are in WG. But I want a YG band. Thanks for your opinion!

I would go with the WG prongs, because in my experience they make the diamond look whiter (unless the stone is much further down the color alphabet, in which case sometimes WG emphasizes color). I also love 2 tone settings :)

Thanks for all the thoughts/opinions. I love seeing pictures of the final projects on PS so I thought I should post mine. I decided on YG - prongs and band. It’s a RHR and I love it! B1B75EBE-22B4-48B6-B9AB-169D36D665FB.jpeg

Very nice! The stones look very white in the pictures but what's your opinion about looking more yellow (or not) in the yellow gold?

Yes! Whiter than I expected. I bought the ring from a PSer and it was in a YG band so I don’t know if a white band would affect the color. There were many prongs in the old setting and I think that caused the diamonds to be darker as opposed to the YG band. Now, the setting is more airy - allowing more light. The prong tips are very small so I don’t think they affect the diamonds at all. Love the diamonds in the new setting!
