You should, "Down a Shoey!"... Yum Yum

Listen as a 52yo Australian I can tell you the vast majority of us just laugh when we see people do it. It’s not something that is done every day for no reason - pretty much it will be a sportsperson of some type who has gained a podium position and is celebrating with the crowd.

Daniel Riccardo - who happens to be my favourite F1 driver, although sadly not this year - has made it a thing whenever he podiums. More often then not, the other drivers and celebrities sharing the podium also do it along with him. Harry Styles and Daniel have been conducting a bit of a mutual admiration society over social media and so when he started his Australian tour in Western Australia - which is where Daniel hails from - he obviously decided to grow that in to his concert.

Is it gross, yep; would I ever do it, nope. But even the young man (Canadian) who won the competition our son is in did it after a win. It’s just a moment of fun and joy for some.

My husband and I watch UFC and there is an aussie fighter (Tai Tuivasa) and he does it at least once every fight, normally from a random person in the audience. I struggle to not gag when I see it LOL. I don't think I could do it.

This is from his wiki page:
Since 2018, Tuivasa has celebrated his victories by doing a shoey, drinking beer from a borrowed shoe.[67] Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph coined the moniker "Shoeyvasa".[68][69] At UFC 254, he won again but was not allowed to do the shoey in the cage, but has since continued the tradition

Makes me want to heave. Just so no.

Aussie here.
No, we don’t drink from our shoes or throw another shrimp on the Barbie (they are called prawns btw).
Nor do Kangaroos hop down all our suburban streets and very very few people die of spider, snake or shark bite.

Bron, we laugh all the time about “kangaroos being everywhere” then 3wks ago two Roos were indeed hopping around two streets away

Oh man, the shrimp on the barbie thing

Spare me! :lol-2:

Or one better that ties in with the shrimp on the barbie - Fosters Beer! The amount of people in the US and UK that have said to us about Fosters even as a gin swilling non-beer drinker I know that Fosters deserved to die back in the 1970’s!

The only thing common to every group everywhere is, people vary within each group.

Very very few people get it ... but I'm working on that. :))

I saw my fair share of shoeys when I was a teenager. It’s certainly not something I have ever done. I’ve also never seen an adult do one either!
I have once seen a “fishey”, I will leave that up to your imagination.

Might need to speak for yourself here Bron, I may have participated in a Shoey or 2 over my 35 odd years on this giant spinning rock :saint::lol:
After all, I grew up in Western Sydney...

EDIT: I have a photo of one of my friends doing one with storm clouds and the ocean in the background, a majestic picture of an Aussie in his natural environment

Hey it’s a drink and a snack!
