Pear Shaped Diamonds – Basics

Pear Shaped Diamond Described
Among the various diamond shapes a pear shaped diamond, sometimes referred to as a teardrop diamond, is a classic choice which can be extremely beautiful when cut well. Though traditionally worn with the tip pointing at the wearer’s heart, the pear cut diamond may be set and worn in a variety of ways. Similar to oval diamonds, and marquise cut diamonds, a pear shaped diamond can elongate the finger when set in a ring. The pear cut diamond shape also works well in pendants and earrings.
The Fancy, Inconvenient Truth
The pear shaped diamonds is often cut for heavier weight, at the expense of beauty. This is because many grading laboratories, including GIA, do not assess the optical performance of the pear cut diamond or other fancy shapes. With no standards enforced, manufacturers tend to plan for the highest yield possible.
Exceptions
The AGS and GCAL assess and grade the optical performance of certain fancy shapes. If you’re seeking cut quality affirmation, fancy shapes with performance deficits will not earn the highest marks from those top-tier laboratories.

Bow Tie Caution
A bow tie is a dark area across the center width of the diamond resulting from a combination of cutting angles. While a well-proportioned pear shaped diamond should have a minimal bow tie effect, be sure to check for this deficit. Viewing a diamond spin-video or images under a variety of lighting conditions will help you identify this.
The oval diamond, marquise, heart diamond, and pear shaped diamond all tend to have bow ties of varying degrees.
Length to Width Ratio:
For a pear shaped diamond it’s about personal preference, but the traditional ratio runs from 1.50 – 1.75. More below.

The beauty of a pear shaped diamond hinges on symmetry. This symmetry ensures an even sparkle across the diamond. You can review a variety of ratios to establish your preference. While the symmetry is essential a slim, long pear cut diamond can be just as beautiful as a shorter, wider shape.
A pear cut diamond will generally look larger from the “face up” position than other shapes of the same carat weight.
Be sure you know the length to width ratio you prefer in your pear shaped diamond. Most people prefer something between 1.50 to 1.75. When the ratio is too low the stone can appear too fat or stubby. When the ratio is too high the stone can appear stretched and skinny.
