BF''s grandmother gave him her mother''s engagement ring to give to me. We decided that although it is lovely, for an engagement ring we''d like something a bit bigger, so I''m going to be resetting this into a pendant that I can wear when we get married and pass down to our children.

We know that the ring is from the nineteen-teens and was from a jeweler in Cleveland (it''s still in its original box with the jeweler''s information on it).

This is my first post in SMTR and I''m not used to taking pictures of jewelry, so please be gentle on my photography skills!

I should wait until you''re done posting-- but that box is kinda cool!

And finally, a handshot (please excuse the state of my hands/nails in this picture and the last one!):

swedish bean, the box is really cool! I should take another picture with it closed--you have to press this weird little button thing to get it to open!

oh LP! It''s beautiful!

I love that you have the box. I''d be tempted to keep it in its original setting--a true piece of history... It''s lovely!

It will be a beautiful pendant!

That is SO COOL. I''m dittoing Coati on the potential temptation to keep it as-is, though I think it will make a gorgeous pendant as well. Either way, post more pics, please!

It is gorgeous, what a treasure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great heirloom! Beautiful!

The ring is beautiful and it''s so sweet of her

What a treasure!! If you do make it into a pendant keep the setting and box. Someday a future owner of this beautiful heirloom might decide to return it to it''s original state. In the mean time enjoy it. It''s almost 100 years old!!

It sure is pretty and I LOVE the box! What a treasure!

Would love to see it!

I love it!!

I will be honest, I think you should wear it as a RHR....its to pretty and it has the most meaning as it. Perhaps you could add a great wrap or something to it.

That box also has some great charm!!!

OMG how totally awesome!! That box is just soo cool!!

The ring is beautiful! And i think it looks lovely on your hand

But if it were me I would not do anything to that ring!! I would keep it in tact and wear it as a RHR, I wouldn''t even think twice about it...

LP: It''s a beautiful ring, and a wonderful story all around. How wonderful that your BF''s grandmother gave him the ring specifically to give to you! It''s a real treasure!

Hey--that's the same shop where my grandfather bought my grandmother's engagement ring! About a decade later, perhaps.

Here's a photo of Grandma's ring:

Add me to the list of people who think you should keep your heirloom in its setting, or at the very least keep the setting. Can you imagine how thrilled your granddaughter would be to wear her great-great-great grandmother's engagement ring, in its original shape, and even in its original box?

I have the diamond from my other grandmother's ring, but the original setting is long lost. I would so love to have it in its original shape.

I actually think it looks BEAUTIFUL just as is, but it will make a gorgeous pendant as well!! What a sweet, sweet gift. That is quite a kind grandmother-in-law you have!

Beautiful ring!! And how cool that you have the box as well!! I would also consider keeping it as is.

It is beautiful!!! What a wonderful piece of family history to have!

I''m going to add my vote to the "keep it as it is" camp. If that is the original mounting, think of all the history they''ve gone through together!

oh LP it is LOVELY! How cool to have the box. If/when I get an ering I am totally saving the box now!

I have to say, I would also keep it as is. Such a cool piece, and would make a lovely RHR. What size are your fingers? It looks good on you!

And Glitterata is there a thread on that ring? I am IN LOVE! That stone is STUNNING and are those Marquise on the sides????

how lovely. what a wonderful heirloom to pass down.

Thank you to everyone who has responded--I will come back later when I''m not getting ready for work to reply to you all individually.

I really like it as-is as well...my concern with making it a RHR was that A. it wouldn''t get worn as much (if at all--I haven''t tried it on my right hand yet, but I injured that hand a couple of years ago and the knuckles are still slightly swollen/bigger than the knuckles on my left hand) and B. I didn''t know if it was appropriate to have a solitaire as a RHR.

So now I''m torn...if I did have it made into a pendant, I would definitely keep the setting and maybe put a sapphire or spinel into it. Thoughts?

I love how you have the original box for it, that''s so cool! It''s a lovely ring, I love sentimental pieces.

Soooo pretty! How sweet. It would make a lovely pendant but is so pretty as it is. I''m no help at all!

Good luck with your decision!

LP, sorry to hijack--I was just so excited to see a ring from the same era and shop!!! as mine. I mean, what are the chances?

Miscka, thank you! Yes, marquises on the side, with single cuts. My grandmother''s transition cut doesn''t have a thread of its own, but there are lots of pics in these threads:

OEC, transition cut, Infinity cut

victorian sapphire w/rose cuts; Grandma''s ring shows up on p. 2
