If you do have a sapphire or spinel set into the ring, will you wear that as a RHR? Seems like you''d have the same problems re: your knuckle size and it possibly looking too much like a solitaire. Also the prongs would become weak if you set another stone, then took that out again and put the diamond back into it. . .(or at least, I assume they would. . . possibly someone can chime in

Personally, I would keep it as is and plan on passing it down to my child/grandchild. I''m not sure how old you are or if you have kids, but say you do have a child and when that child''s child grows up, imagine that ring being passed down having aged an additional 40 years older and STILL intact. Wow, what a gift to pass on.

I really like it as-is as well...my concern with making it a RHR was that A. it wouldn''t get worn as much (if at all--I haven''t tried it on my right hand yet, but I injured that hand a couple of years ago and the knuckles are still slightly swollen/bigger than the knuckles on my left hand) and B. I didn''t know if it was appropriate to have a solitaire as a RHR.

So now I''m torn...if I did have it made into a pendant, I would definitely keep the setting and maybe put a sapphire or spinel into it. Thoughts?

PIrate, you could have it sized to fit whatever finger you''d like to wear it on. You could wear it on your middle finger or your pinky if you don''t like wearing it on your ring finger. There''s no reason not to wear a solitaire on your right hand (except personal preference)--lots of people do. I don''t think anyone would think twice about it. If they did, you could explain that it''s your husband''s great grandmother''s engagement ring, a gift from his grandmother, and they will be thrilled for you.

If you do reset the diamond, make sure the jeweler understands that you want to keep the setting and takes care removing the diamond! Otherwise they might mangle it. In general, antique jewelry loses some of its value when it''s altered. Careful sizing should be safe with your ring, but resetting the stone could damage the setting. I know the monetary value isn''t the main consideration here, the sentimental value is, but it''s still something to think about.

Beautiful ring, and what a lovely history - so cool to have the box and everything. That will be such a special stone to pass down

It''s lovely! I would totally keep it as-is and wear it as a right hand ring that you can then pass down to your children. There is just too much history there that would be lost if you reset it. I can tell you your daughter(s) will love to get to try that sparkly thing on when they''re little and looking through your jewelry box. I received an antique ring from my mom when I was 16 and I always loved when my mom would let me try it on when I was little.

Its so lovely! I''m another one that thinks you should leave it in the setting. It has such a classic look. I don''t think there would be anything weird at all about a solitaire as a rhr.

A solitaire can be a rhr no probs. Jewelry can be worn however you like.

I don''t know what size it is, but it would be a darling pinky ring or first finger ring (or whichever finger it fits!). I can picture it stacked with slim antique bands.

Make whatever piece you desire, but it''s just so special that it''s intact with original box.

Oooo, Coati--I love the idea of stacking it. It''s a little big on my left ring finger, so it might fit on my right hand, and I bet it could look beautiful.

So many ideas...

Sure, why not! I wear a .30ish ct. solitaire diamond as a RHR pretty much every day!
Now there are a handful of people who think it's an engagement ring.. (umm hello! It's on the middle finger of my RIGHT HAND!!) but let them think what they like! In reality it's no big deal - do what you like!

I like the stacking idea as well!!

It is so lovely and I LOVE the old box! You are lucky so have such a wonderful piece. I totally understand why people would want you to keep it in its setting however if you will wear it more as a pendant that is what I would do (bezel milgrained)

Tacori, if I made it a pendant I was thinking a milgrained bezel as well...it would be pretty.

Maybe I''ll wear it for a while as a RHR and see how I like it. Then I''ll have more information to help me decide.

I too vote for keeping it as is - here''s a crazy idea - could you get a beautiful chain and wear the ring as a necklace?

It''s really special that it has the original box with it. I know it''s not quite what you want, but it looks great on you!

Awwww! I''m so happy to finally see some photos of this lovely. It sure is beautiful LP

It is very pretty, and I love the setting that it is in.

hi ladypirate :)

just love your ring - and how amazing to receive such an important gift from your BF''s grandmother!

i think it looks lovely as is, and i''d definitely keep it in its setting - so there''s something from *his* side of the family in original condition to pass down. one day he might like to say to his daughter "here''s the ring that my great grandmother wore...and now i''m giving it to you!"

it would be a special gift for him to be able to pass down.

Thank you again to everyone for replying--it really is a special gift.

We have decided to keep the ring as-is, since it is such a lovely piece. Actually, there''s even a possibility that K might reverse his no-upgrade policy and use this as an engagement ring for a few years until we are a big more settled! He apparently thought that an upgrade meant that you didn''t keep the original ring. So who knows...maybe you''ll be getting more pictures of it in a few months.

Love the ring ... and the box is really cool.

LP I love your ring and the box. I vote for keeping it as a ring too.

How awesome that you have the original box and all--I''d also vote for keeping that beauty as is. It''s gorgeous, and the sentiment behind it is so special. What a sweet lady your grandmother-in-law is!

I love that ring, but I gotta tell you I ADORE that ring box, it has so much character!

Oh good for you! This really is a beautiful ring and to have it in its original box... it''s like a little piece of history you have there. I''m so glad you decided to keep it as it is. You can always buy a pendant if you want one, but this ring is really something. If it were me, I wouldn''t change a thing about it. I have to say it looks great on your hand too!

What a great ring, and having the original box is even better. I''m so glad you are leaving it as-is!

I think that''s a great idea! It''s such a beautiful ring.

great decision, LP :)

and i''m with AdiS on this one - i actually think it looks wonderful on your hand as is. even as an ''IER-PU'' (initial engagement ring - pre upgrade!!) it would still be delightful. i''m sure we''ve all seen a lot of e-rings which are bigger - but uglier! i think your ring is elegant and suits your hand. and - i also wondered about this - it looks bigger to me than 1/3 ct - altho i have no idea what ring/hand size you are, of course. but, for whatever reason, it''s 1/3 of a carat which is playing more like 1/2 a carat on your finger.

very pretty - and if i was someone who encountered you, say, at work or wherever, i''d be jealous of such a meaningful, classy ring and how elegant it looks on your hand!

you might want to have it given a ''check up'' tho before you start wearing it - at its age, it''s easily conceivable that the prongs could be loose.

wear in good health.

LP- I''m late to your thread, but I am so glad that you are keeping the ring together! It''s such a special piece, truly. Family heirlooms mean the world to me! Love that box too... you can tell it has so many stories to tell
