1.7 carat diamond pricing question

Hi everyone,

I'm looking into purchasing a diamond (diamond only) with the following specs:

- 1.6 - 1.75 carat
- F color
- VS1 clarity
- Excellent cut
- Depth 58 - 63%

I've done some looking at stores but have not yet begun the negotiation process. That said, I have been quoted anywhere from $20 - $32K for this type of ring. I believe that there is significant negotiation room and am prepared to make an offer in the range of $14 - 16K. Couple questions:

1. If you've purchased a similar diamond, what did you end up paying? (please exclude the price of the setting and taxes, if you can) breakout). Note even if your diamond is not exactly the same, it would help me plenty if you could post the specs of your diamond, the dealer list price and the price you paid.

2. How much negotiation room do I have and what is the standard starting point for negotiating a diamond. For example, when buying a new car, its pretty typical to find out the dealers cost (Invoice - less incentives) and offer slightly higher. What similar benchmark is available for buying a diamond?

3. Please comment on my proposed price range - too high / too low? What would you offer for a similar diamond cited above?

Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately you can't just make up your own price for a diamond. The prices in the same color and clarity can range like you said above and there is usually a reason a stone will run less. Make sure you look for one with a legitimate lab report (AGS or GIA), and keep studying about the cut grade.good luck with your shopping.

just try blue nile price and compare.

I just about to buy one and also wonder about the price $25K Canadian.

1.71 E VS2 Triple E on GIA
Depth 59.2
Table 60
Crown angle 33
Pavilion 41

I bought this a couple of weeks ago. The ring (it was mounted on) arrived yesterday but i'm not at home. Will check it out and let you know how it is.

It has a high HCA score and from what i understand it is a 'steep/deep' cut, although still a GIA triple Ex.

Something with better HCA numbers is closer to the $20k mark:

Remember these are both IF/H so you may save a few k by dropping a clarity step, but for F colour you're looking at way way more than these prices.

The cheapest 1.7+ on bluenile at VS2 = $15,446

The cheapest 1.7+ on bluenile at VS1 = $18,116

Remember tho, they are probably cheap for a reason (eg cut - GIA Ex doesn't mean _that_ much)
