My wife will reach 10,000 child days of being a mother to our 4 kids soon and I'm going to surprise her.

I posted here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/peridot-and-diamond-drop-earrings.195224/#post-3557312#p3557312

But might have been wrong forum.

"Anyway, I found these and was wondering if there was a way to check comparable pieces?

Any help greatly appreciated"

Thanks!

WAAAAAAYYYY over priced.

For that price, you can get a lot more diamonds in another style. 1/3 of a carat? Too much for that.

Peridots are very cheap, maybe $100 for the quality that picture shows.

If you like those earrings, you can just contact someone and have them custom made with a gemstone that is more valuable than peridot, or with peridot. If my husband spent $5K on peridot earrings, I would be mad!

Ok thanks!

I need to find a more reliable website than bluenile it seems.

Gems are a minefield for the unknowing...

we can help you find something! What's your budget? Is there a particular reason you were looking at peridot?

Also, I think this is terribly sweet. And you should email my husband with this idea. :P

What a lovely lovely idea! But yes, terribly overpriced for Peridot...

what a fantastic idea! you can do an awful lot with $5k! peridots aren't super expensive, but they are the birthstone for august and can be very beautiful. tell use your priorities-- is $5k an upper end or the target? do they need to be earrings? a certain style? diamonds? peridot? what else?-- and we'll give you all kinds of direction!

firstly, I have time - we have 4 kids and so mum days are growing at 4 a day and will reach 10,000 in May, 2014

secondly, choice of piece - I bought her a ring as the first thing I ever bought, (and then engagement/wedding/eternity) so I thought I'd switch to ears

third, generally I like a bit of colour and her favourite is green - but that's definately NOT a limit - in fact the rings are diamonds/sapphires (so anything goes, really)

fourth, we like old stuff - vintage, art deco is great - doesnt need to be new

lastly? she doesnt like gold - has to be white gold/ platinum

oops budget - I'd love to stretch to $10,000 - but realistically $5k is closer - but if something is really special I might find some more over the next 6 months ...

What sort of style does she like? You picked drops, so we can rule those in. Does she like simple & classic, or more ornate? Would hoops or studs interest her too? What colors does she wear most in clothing? That can give you a clue, or yours or your kids' birthstones.

For estate pieces, you might browse around here -- they're having a 10% off sale, too -- for ideas. http://www.newyorkestatejewelry.com/earrings/5/1/all/all/cat. Or here: http://www.1stdibs.com/jewelry/earrings/.

If you see something you'd like adapted & want to look for stones & have them made, you'll find plenty of help here for that too. It's a terrific idea for a present!

Yeah... on the HIGH end I wouldn't pay more than 1k for earrings in that style in 18k. I do like peridot and think they are a beautiful style, but you could go to a jeweler and have earrings, a matching necklace, and maybe a ring or bracelet made in that style with nice peridot for less than that price.

(Also, I think it is SO COOL that you are doing this to commemorate 10,000 child days of being a mother! That's such a unique and special milestone.)

$5k is a very healthy, generous budget. Don't worry!

For green, in addition to peridot, you might think about emerald, tsavorite garnet, demantoid garnet, chrome tourmaline, jade.

Definitely look through the various vintage sites linked and see what pops out to you!

To get more ideas, take a look at two of my favorite jewelry blogs:
http://gemgossip.com/
http://jewelrywhore.com/ (interesting name, I know)
http://eriebasin.tumblr.com/ (shop and blog)

You could also think about contemporary designers:
http://www.pollywales.com
https://www.clay-pot.com/
http://www.ylang23.com/
http://www.greenwichjewelers.com/
Some of these will be more or less "overpriced" but you're paying for the design and the craftsmanship, but probably better than the Blue Nile, and, anyway, they can be inspiration for custom, as can vintage.

Another question: Are you looking for something that she will wear on a casual, everyday basis OR something that need to go with an outfit or for special occasions? I don't know what your wife's style is like, or how often she changes her jewelry, but some women might consider diamond drop earrings to be on the "fancy" side. Some people might prefer studs, hoops (like the ones above), or even a necklace for everyday wear. But totally depends! Just something to think about.

Some potentially more "everday" looks:
I'm not vouching for quality or pricing or availability, just thinking about style and inspiration
Swap in green gemstones as needed...

You're definitely in the right forum now and PSers love nothing more than going on the hunt for something special as you can see :))

Both the Blue Nile and 1st Dibs earrings that you've posted are lovely and elegant. However as others have said, the Blue Nile are vastly overpriced. It's great that you have a have a healthy budget for the gift AND you've left plenty of time up your sleeve. Here is one more pair of peridot drop earrings for price comparison though they are briolettes
http://www.aliciasjewelers.com/greg...ar-shaped-peridot-drop-earrings-69-c-t-w.html

Idea - If you still like the BN pair above all, you could have them custom made by one of the PS recommended vendors for much less and, instead of the tiny rounds, use actual shaped diamonds bezel set - round, marquise, square cushion or princess (kite set). Not as expensive as you might think at the size needed. If you used someone like Brian Gavin (BGD) or Whiteflash (WF) they will source all the stones you need including the peridot.

Alternatively - you could have the peridot custom cut by one of the fantastic precision cutters - again not as expensive as you might think and peridot is something many might have on hand or be able to easily source the rough. This way you get superbly cut, sparkling stones in the shape and size you want - e.g. pear - instead of the luck of the draw. However in this case you would need to use a jeweller who takes "outside stones" - DanielM on Etsy is one that comes to mind that many PSers have used with confidence(though he could probably source them too). http://www.etsy.com/shop/danielmjewelry?ref=l2-shopheader-name

No pears at Gemfix at the moment but perhaps this will give you food for thought :))

For a different green check out the tsavorite garnets. Though these are a more expensive gem than peridot, they should still be well within your budget but probably will definitely be a custom cut since pairs of tsav pears don't abound.

Mmmmm... decisions, decisions. What a lovely dilemma =)

You have such an important occasion to celebrate and a very healthy budget to work with. However, with that healthy budget, it is easy to go in too many different directions. It would be helpful to narrow down what you are looking for.
1. Dangles only?
2. Diamond only or do you want coloured stones in there?
3. If coloured stones, what colours are important? Red, blue, green, etc?

I prefer dangle to stud
I prefer green colour
I prefer one main stone plus supporting smaller ones rather than only a cluster of smaller stones

it doesnt matter to me if the green one is a valuable stone - eg could be emerald as the main $ or peridot as the main feature with the supporting diamonds having the real value

thank you!

Ready-made earrings or are you up to selecting the stones yourself and custom designing the earrings?

all of those are excellent!

thanks

and I dont think im up to designing - I think I will buy vintage

I love green dangly earrings too! :) Great choice.

Don't be afraid to buy loose stones and have the jewellery made - the forum members here are so lovely and helpful at coming up with ideas, and there's something extra special about wearing something that you designed and commissioned.

For reference, I bought loose stones and had these earrings constructed for well under half the price the price of the Blue Nile peridot earrings. They're tsavorite garnets (about 5x7mm each), in 14K white gold, with approx. 0.7ctw of diamonds. They might be a little simpler than the statement piece you seem to be drawn to, but I find I'm wearing them a couple of times a week as they're very versatile.

p1070198.jpg

I have other very elaborate long drop earrings (jade + emerald + diamond ones in particular; there's that green dangly motif again) but I find I only wear them once or twice a year, which is a real shame. So, you may also wish to consider if this is something you want to see in her ears a lot, or whether it will be something that only comes out of the velvet box on very special occasions.

If you are located in the UK, Kiki McDonough makes some classic earrings with semiprecious and precious stones. Kate Middleton frequently wears her jewelry. I think it is overpriced, but you can't go wrong with the designs.

thats a great thought

I could source the loose stones, find a local manufacturing jeweller and give them a pic of the look Im after

thinking......

Yeeesss!!! I just wrote a looonnng post and the system kicked me out!!

Here's another idea - to make more versatile earrings, why not use jade or chrysprase drops. There are many vintage sets of lovely drops which can be repurposed in your own special design. You can also have diamond earring jackets made for more dressy occasions.

Again these lovely gumdrops could be set with faceted peridot for daywear and add diamond jackets.

These are diamond jackets, the earring post goes through the little hole in the middle and they can be made in many different designs as you can see. It makes a more casual earring into something very special when desired. Many PSers have them.

ok - I found these (cant work out how to upload pics)

I could go to whiteflash diamond pair finder and now I just need a nice, elegant design

awesome!

Ummm... now we've fired you up we have to slow you down again

No coloured stoner would recommend that pair of peridot because of the ginormous windows. Windows mean they are badly cut and that funny oval in the middle depicts it perfectly in the Multicolour pictures.

There's a lot more to choosing coloured stones than picking a pretty colour

ha! I thought it was getting too easy!!!

lol

I will now look at the further links posted in the above few new posts

windows, jackets,.... hmmm slowly learning....

can jackets be an "upgrade" later? or do them all at once?

 Jackets can absolutely be a later purchase since they are a separate item. They don't even have to be bought at the same place.
