Hi, I recently purchased this Lovely Ring marked: 14K, Pink Sapphire Ring from a Elderly Estate.
The ring was sold to me as 14K Yellow Gold ring with Pink Unknown Stone. I have since tested the
stone with a Presidium Gem Tester as Pink Sapphire. I would like any opinions, as to whether this
could be a Untreated Sapphire? The ring has a definite Vintage Setting and the stated history was
that the ring was quite old. With my small loupe it looks quite clear from inclusions. I am a novice
buyer / collector of vintage jewelry, please forgive my ignorance. Any opinions are appreciated and
I thank you in advance. Best

The Presidium gem tester is well known to be inaccurate. There are several things to check for.
1. What is it?
2. Is it natural or synthetic (both could be free of inclusions or have inclusions, usually sharing the same R.I.)
3. Is it treated? (Cannot tell by loupe alone unless very experienced and / or it has distinctive telltale inclusions).
4. The stone could be new. It is quite easy to replace an old stone with a new stone.

Depending on how much or little you paid for it, it might not be worth it to send it to AGL for verification. AGL will test stones that are already set for an added fee. A local gemmologist probably will not have the proper tools to check for treatment but if experienced, and the key word is experienced because many are not well versed with coloured gemstones, can at least ID the stone for you by checking the R.I and possibly S.G.

I can't think of a way to look this up, but from my small experience, pink sapphires were not commonly used in antique jewelry (they focused on blue sapphires or rubies). The popularity of pink sapphires is relatively recent. Doesn't mean it is impossible it's an antique pink sapphire, simply less likely.

Yes, thank you. I believe it is a vintage setting, not really antique.
