2 prs stud earrings, no paperwork, want to upgrade - help?

Hi, I'm new here and have already learned a lot, but haven't quite found a thread to cover my question. I have two pairs of diamond stud earrings:

  • Pair 1 were given to me by a boyfriend 20 years ago and are smaller, but obviously better color (colorless). If they came w/ paperwork I never thought to keep it (he gave me nice jewelry frequently.)
Pair 2 belonged to my husband's grandmother (no sentiment attached to the earrings from anyone) and are larger than my first pair, but are slightly yellow in color. Each son in husband's family was provided some old jewelry to "harvest" the diamonds from for his future bride's ring - since we bought me a gorgeous vintage ring, no harvesting for additional stones was required and I've worn the earrings for a decade. These earrings are probably 40+ years old but I have no Info or documentation on them.

I would like to have larger studs, in white gold. Is there a way to take these old earrings and somehow "upgrade" my studs? We have not established a relationship w/ a jeweler or appraiser where we live.

Somewhat related - has anyone done something similar with regard to tennis bracelets? I also have two of these, one of which, frankly has diamonds of poor quality (a gift from long ago.) I'd love to sell them somehow and convert that into something I'd wear all the time.

Thanks!

Welcome to PS!

There is the preloved forum here where folks have had success in selling. There is also DiamondBistro and ebay. You would probably have more luck trying to sell your pieces than you ever would finding someone to take it on trade if you didn't buy it from them.

I sold a pair of 1.5 ctw studs to a local, high end jeweler when I found PriceScope and wanted higher quality diamonds. I didn't bother to get an appraisal because I pretty much knew what I had and was happy to get the credit for the diamonds and used it to buy a watch.

The smartest way to go about it would be to get an appraisal from an independent jewelry appraiser who is not involved in selling diamonds, but not all of us have local access to a good independent appraiser. If you can't do that, I would take the diamond studs and bracelets to aboutb 3 nice jewelry stores and see what they say they are worth and see if any would buy them from you. Then at least you can get an idea of what they are worth in your area and you can decide whether to sell. I would not have bought my replacement studs at that jewelry store because I wanted higher quality diamonds than the typical nice jewelry store puts in earrings and I bought from an online vendor I found here.

You'd have to have the diamonds graded by GIA probably in order to sell on Diamond Bistro unless you are selling them for a very low price.

The "resources" tab has a link to independent appraisers.

ID Jewelry will take in trade ins from other vendors. They are also very competitive in price for diamond jewelry.

People in that area in the past have mentioned Quest Jewelers. I do not know a particular appraiser in that area.

I too have wondered about trading in or selling some of my diamonds that don't have certificates. I will keep watching here.

Wow - thank you so much! I was not aware of Quest and they are reasonably close! This little project isn't at the top of my to do list, but I will keep you posted when I make some headway on it! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!
